Asthma

Asthma is a chronic lung disease where the tissue and airways of the lungs become extremely sensitive to certain substances. When these substances are breathed in, the lungs become inflamed. The muscles around the airways tighten and squeeze the lungs, and passages within the lungs swell and tighten. The airways themselves produce mucus, which further clogs the tightened, swollen airways. A person having an asthma attack finds it very difficult to breathe, and a severe attack can even be fatal.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but people with asthma are most often diagnosed as children. Symptoms can include wheezing, a tight feeling in the chest, shortness of breath, and coughing. Some people have mild symptoms all the time, and some people have no symptoms at all, but everyone with asthma is susceptible to occasional severe attacks or flare-ups of symptoms when they are exposed to triggers. Triggers vary widely but can include:

  • Allergens (dust mites, pet fur, mold, pollen, grass)
  • Irritants (smoke, pollution, dust, chemicals)
  • Viral infections
  • Physical activity, especially outdoors
  • Certain medications or chemicals in foods (aspirin, sulfites)

Treatment for most asthma patients involves three steps. Patients learn what their asthma triggers are and avoid them. They take a daily control medication, usually an inhaled corticosteroid, to reduce inflammation in the lungs. Also, they have rescue medication with them at all times to take in case of a severe attack. These quick-acting inhaled medications relax the muscles around the airways and allow the lungs to open up for air.

There is no cure for asthma, but with treatment it should not interfere with daily life and activities.

REF - COVID VACCINE & CARE: I would give this team of doctors a negative zero star if possible. 

BACK STORY:
My primary referred me to UCSF Allergy/Vaccine Clinic to figure out how I can get my booster. I had a terrible allergic reaction to the NMRA vaccine (1.5 months of swollen eyes, upper respiratory issues and rash over my body). I opted to take the JJ vaccine as my 2nd shot. I had no issues with the JJ shot as I did with the NMRA shot.  I was assigned into Dr. Otani's care for this case and consult. 

CANCELED APPOINTMENT:
I was all set up for my video appointment and then Dr Otani canceled the appointment and gave me an appointment 3 weeks out. I had already waited a long time for the original appointment. So this cancellation caused me to now be 1 month expired from my last shot. I was also set up after my video appointment with her for a clinic appointment to finally receive my booster shot which then brought me out to 1.5 months expired from my 2nd Covid vaccination…   

A week before my appointment I ended up with Covid. So now I was having to deal with Covid and also a challenge of still needing my 1st booster afterwards. 

I reported before my appointment that I had come down with Covid. But I would still like to keep my vaccine consult appointment since I was still having the issue of not being fully vaccinated. i.e. my 1st booster. The clinic tried to cancel this appointment anyway! I had to convince them that it was still important for me to be seen because of my concerns of now recovering from Covid (Covid rash, neuropathy on the Rt side of my body). 

DAY OF APPOINTMENT:
I had my consult with Dr Otani’s assistant Jessica Zheng, NP and was met with a smug I am so sorry you got Covid comment. I was taken back with this attitude and attempted to discuss what needed to be done with my booster.

At this point I was definite I did not want to go through another NMRA shot since I was now dealing with lingering Covid symptoms. I felt at this point my body really could not handle another allergic reaction on top of all of the residual Covid symptoms. 

I proceeded to show her a picture I took of myself during the time (with a timestamp) of the reactions to the NMRA vaccine so she had proof and reference to the incident and that I was not a person seeking something unrealistic. 

Jessica excused herself for a minute and then came in with Dr Otani. They both proceeded to posture over me as I sat in the exam chair. I was again met with a smug answer now coming from Dr Otani, that they didn't have the JJ vaccine in their department to give and they “preferred” the NMRA vaccine instead. 

CDC UPDATE INFO:
CDC has decided to not discontinue the JJ but requires a specialist approval for the vaccine which I explained to both of them. They responded with a reaction as if they didn't even know that this was now an option for JJ. I thought this was strange that they were not even up to date on their vaccine knowledge from the CDC, being they are a major vaccine clinic.

REACTION:
At this point I was steaming! These professionals really don't care about the health of their patients! I am a person who wants to get myself protected and has gone to great lengths to do so!

I proceeded to ask Dr Otani where I should be heading to at this point in the UC system to receive what I needed (JJ doctor approval and possible vaccine). Any suggestions?? She just kept referring me back to my primary which my primary would just keep referring me back to their allergy clinic since it is truly an allergic reaction that happened to the NMRA vaccine. It was like talking to an obstinate, broken record!

After attempting to be a responsible person by getting exactly what the CDC requires me to get and to be met with such low level healthcare I was beyond angry! I was expecting a place such as UCSF to have standards of professionalism and patient care beyond other medical entities. I was shocked at the lackadaisical attitude and unprofessionalism of this department and the two professionals standing in front of me. (Dr Otani & Jessica Zheng)

I am the 1st to admit after such ill treatment and care, I was so upset I was seriously about to be escorted out of the place by security!

In short this clinic and these two medical doctors are uncaring, unprofessional and unethical! If you have another choice in Covid Vaccine Care and care in general I would definitely head elsewhere.
