Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

  • A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
  • A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
  • Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure done to check on the health of the heart. A tiny, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel through a very small opening, usually in the groin, and threaded through the blood vessel up to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, it can diagnose problems in the heart and perform certain corrective procedures.

A coronary catheter can be used to:

  • Take blood samples
  • Inject dye for an angiogram
  • Check for valve defects
  • Measure oxygen and pressure levels within the heart chambers
  • Take a biopsy
  • Perform a percutaneous coronary intervention, or procedure to clear blocked arteries
  • Widen narrowed valve openings

Because all of this can be accomplished without the need for open surgery, cardiac catheterization has become a popular option.

Heidi is really wonderful. I am always confident in her care and feel that she listens to me and values my opinion on my choices for my treatments and care. I have a lot of convicence in her as I have found she doesn't give up on me when I am reluctant to do something. She just waits until I see the error of my decisons and makes sure I am treated well. Also her nurses are really good at keeping me apprised of developlments . They are very friendly and caring which I think also reflects on her leadership.

I asked if she could help me quit smoking with a medication that worked for me before and she said yes. That really meant a lot to me because my primary doctor is hard to get to or see. She set me up right away. Very informative about the sleep apnea stuff and A-fib still happening but not as much as before. So I'm really happy about that! I have been seeing doctors since I was 22 with different diagnosis for years. I feel the heart institute has been very helpful and I trust them.

Heidi has been the only person I see for my heart issues for years now. She has shown a lot of patience with me as I wander through the different decisions to make regarding heart care and has shared with me the conferences with others regarding treatment so that I can make choices. I appreciate Heidi! She listens well to my issues and always tries to get to the bottom of them by working on my prescription doses of medications. This last appointment was the first time I had experienced the new AI recording. She said it gave her more time to listen to me, rather than being on the computer while visiting with me. She also said it helps with diagnosing because it picks up certain words.

Heidi and her team are really wonderful to me. It can't be easy for them to meet and help all of jus who have heart conditions but she and all her team are kind, considerate and helpful in any way possible. I feel we are very fortunate to have such people in Missoula. Iam very clear as to my medical condition, thanks to Heidi. I have resisted some tests, etc. In the past but she has not given up on me.

Response was great to my questions and concerns.Not related to this particular visit but instead to my very first visit to ER, my arriving with pain was recognized instantly by everyone even receptionist and acted on very quickly and I was never out of sight of at least one attendant/ nurse / Doctor. Heidi is exceptional. She knows all of my other medical providers and asks about them each visit. She also keeps tabs on when I need blood work and has someone call to remind me. I was cruising and out of town several months. Calls from her office kept coming until I responded. Note: I only have regular heart care, from stents in 2018. I've never had such a caring doctor.
