Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a device implantation procedure that reduces the risk of stroke for patients who have atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats out of rhythm. Atrial fibrillation causes blood to collect in the left atrial appendage, a small sac located in the top left chamber of the heart. The blood that collects in this appendage can form clots and cause stroke when pumped out of the heart.

To implant the device, a long, flexible tube, called a catheter, is inserted into a large vein in the groin and advanced to the heart. Once the tube reaches the left side of the heart, X-ray is used to guide a thinner catheter into the left atrial appendage. The tiny device is then passed through the tube and into the appendage. When the doctor has made sure it is in the right place, she takes the catheter out, and the procedure is completed.

This minimally invasive procedure usually requires a hospital stay of at least one day. Normal activities may be resumed within a few days. About 45 days following implantation, a test will be done to determine whether the device has closed the left atrial appendage. Check-ups have to be performed every year to make sure the device is in place.

I have yet to meet a doctor in Providence or Partnership (and naturopaths) that has approached my health and wellness with a full, multi-faceted approach.Dr. Berry and I talked briefly about heart healthy diet and vitamins and supplements. ALL of my doctors, my entire experience with healthcare system has left me with unfulfilled needs and questions.. As far as diet, exercise, nutrition and supplements, mental health (anxiety) for me personally.So I don't mean to criticize Dr. Berry, I am very glad he is my doctor.

I found Dr Berry to be an excellent care provider. He listened carefully, ordered appropriate tests and I never felt rushed. There is still no answer to my heart abnormality but I feel sure he will come to an answer. With other providers I have felt dismissed in my concern for symptoms because of my age. I never felt that way with Dr Berry. Just because we are old doesn't mean we don't want to feel as well as possible. My only issue was the length of time before my appointment but it seems to be that way with all care providers. This is not a complaint just an observation. I look forward to continuing to be a patient of Dr Berry.

Dr. Berry has treated my congestive heart failure and related heart problems for nearly 20 years. He is a superb physician and I am continually grateful for his care. My downgrades of scores on this survey are because my quarterly follow-up appointment was delayed 2 months and I was referred to another facility for an echocardiogram. I suspect both situations were the result of staffing shortages. I hope the care at the International Heart Institute will not degrade now that it Is the Providence Heart Institute.

Dr. Berry is an awesome cardiologist. I have had heart issues for the last thirty years and have been treated by countless cardiologists through those years. With that said, Dr. Berry is at the top of my list, both in knowledge and an excellent bedside manner. I would recommend him to anyone with heart issues. In addition, the nurse that took my vitals (can't remember her name) prior to Dr. Berrys visit, was extremely personable, professional and thorough. All in all it was a very pleasant experience.

I could not ask for a better physician than Dr. Bradley Berry. Even though I see him once or twice a year, he treats me as an old friend. He is caring, supportive and I feel safe in his hands. I especially appreciate that he recommended the stress test for me this time as I had concerns about some discomfort with my heart. I know he will respond quickly with the results and I completely trust him.

Dr. Barry has been my cardiologist for 20 years. He understands my condition and discusses it with me in language I can understand. While I have not had in between questions this year I have in the past and he has been prompt to respond and listen I believe, I am able to live close to a normal life because of Dr. Barry and the international heart institute cheer for me.

I have a heart procedure coming up in March. I was seriously considering cancelling the procedure. Dr. Berry had previously treated my Father, Mother and older Brother. After consulting with Dr. Berry, I was relieved as he really took the time to explain pros and cons about my ablation surgery. The receptionist was very funny to be around and also professional.

You have very dedicated people working for Providence. My husband's cardiologist just resigned. My husband's concern for losing such a valued doctor is palpable. Dr Berry is a wonderful doctor. I just told Dr Berry on this visit that it was very impressive to me that I mentioned a small problem, that I thought was nothing, and he immediately checked into it and found I needed a pacemaker. I've never had a dr that I told something like this that responded with the speed and caring he showed. IHI is very lucky to have him on staff!!
