Weight Loss Surgery (Bariatric Surgery)
Bariatric or weight-loss surgery is a surgical procedure performed to help significantly obese patients lose weight when more traditional methods, such as dieting and exercise, have not helped. Depending on the type, these surgeries change the gastrointestinal tract to limit how much food can be eaten and also change how food is absorbed by the body. Of the various bariatric surgeries available, the most common is gastric bypass.
By far the most common of the gastric bypass surgeries is called Roux-en-Y. During this surgery, part of the stomach and small intestine are detached from the gastrointestinal tract, in order to make the tract smaller. The surgeon divides the stomach into two parts. The working stomach, at the end of the esophagus, is now tiny - only the size of a walnut. This makes patients feel full after eating a small amount of food. Then the small intestine is also divided, and after bypassing a section of the small intestine to reduce food absorption, the intestine is attached to the small stomach pouch. The patient now has a working stomach and intestine like before, only much smaller.
Because gastric bypass is used to treat extreme obesity, it can reduce the risk of some of the problems associated with obesity. Gastric bypass can help treat or reduce the risk for such conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and type 2 diabetes. However, it is a major surgery and also carries risks itself. Any surgery can lead to infection, bleeding, or blood clots, and weight loss surgery in particular carries risks of leaks in the gastrointestinal system, malnutrition, bowel obstructions, and vomiting.
Typically patients are considered candidates for gastric bypass surgery if they have a BMI greater than 40, or sometimes if they have a BMI between 35 and 40 but are suffering from obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes. The outlook is generally good, with most patients losing between 50-75% of their excess weight in 1-2 years. However, patients must follow strict diet guidelines so that the stomach can heal, starting with no food at all, then followed by a liquid diet for some time. For many severely obese patients who have tried strict diets before without success, gastric bypass surgery is the tool that allows them to finally achieve their weight loss and health goals.

I had the Lap-Band procedure on November 20th two years ago. I weighed 256 pounds. I was very overweight. I was insulin resistant, unhappy, and uncomfortable. Overall, just not a happy life. So the extra weight had a pretty big impact on all aspects of my life. There were things I couldn’t do but wish I could because of the extra weight - like having kids for example. But now it’s a possibility. One of my doctors suggested I look into Lap-Band surgery, so I started to do a lot of research. I searched online and found Dr. Davtyan as one of the highest-listed doctors for the surgery so I reached out. Dr. Davtyan is amazing - he answers every question and he is very thorough. The whole team is super awesome and nice! I love coming here and am treated like family. I decided Lap-Band would be the most reasonable for where I was age-wise and just to test the waters to see if that would work for me. I was 22 when I had my surgery. So I didn't want something that was going to be permanent for life. It’s really nice that it’s removable so I can take it out at any point. I’ve gotten great results so far so I’ll keep going with it! It was so simple and easy. The recovery was not bad at all. I felt normal and went back to work very quickly. No symptoms, no issues. Never had any pain or anything. It was just back to normal life. I never had a problem. Losing weight makes everything easier to do. I can work for longer, I'm not exhausted, I'm not tired, I feel great! And actually, now I'm going to school to be a registered dietitian! I changed my life! I don't eat carbs. I don't eat sugar. I eat meat and vegetables. And that is basically all for my day. I was counting calories at first when I was trying to stay at 1000 per day. But I just eat until I'm good. And I eat the right food. That's the most important thing. It affected all areas of my everyday life in a positive way. I can actually do everything. I don’t have to try getting up every morning. I can move easily. I can be active. I sleep better. I wear the clothes I want to wear. It will change your life completely! I love all the changes! It's been the best thing I've ever done for myself. Sometimes you need to take care of yourself, so you can take care of everybody else. My biggest takeaway from this whole thing is, I did it for myself, but it ended up benefiting everybody else!
