Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

  • A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
  • A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
  • Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

  • Age
  • Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
  • A family history of heart attacks
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Dr McGann is a very thorough Dr and thoughtful Dr and patient. He listens and tellsYou what he sees in the tests and what the next steps should be for my health. I understand he is leaving and his leaving is my loss and more so your loss because patients will find another provider to Meet their needs. It's rare to have a Dr like Dr McGann and if I could I would go with him wherever he goes. From my experience people don't leave jobs they like unless management is failing them. That failure is a reflection on bad practices put in place for short sided returns that a business may not ever recover from. But in today's big business mold it's always about putting profit over quality of care.

Everything about this practice was outstanding. The staff were friendly and helpful before, during, and after the appointment. I was a new patient to this practice, but have been treated by other practitioners and specialists at Swedish for a number of years. During my visit, it was obvious that the physician had reviewed my record and was familiar with tests and procedures that had been performed in previous years. After my visit, the staff contacted me the next day to assist in arranging several other appointments that had been suggested by the physician. Overall, my first visit to this practice was an outstanding experience.

I am a relatively new patient for Dr. McGann. At each of my visits, Dr. McGann and staff have been pleasant to work with. Dr. McGann was completely familiar with my medical record and current with the results of both recent tests that had been performed as well as tests that had been performed in previous years. I never felt rushed during any of our visits. I would highly recommend Dr. McGann and his staff to other patients with cardiac related problems

Dr McGann is an outstanding clinician whose presence is both compassionate and medically accurate for the patient. Although he meets with many patients and does surgical procedures as well, the feeling one has is that you are the only one he sees because he gives full attention to the needs of the current patient and never seems rushed although we know each visit has a definite time limit. He is truly a credit to the medical profession.

My primary doctor is next door and sent a referral twice plus walking it over directly to schedule my first appointment . I also came by this office twice to schedule with no luck. A very helpful woman called catching the issue. I think she was dr. Mcgann's asst. She helped sort it out. After that- everything was flawless. He's a great doctor and the team was always friendly, professional and helpful. Great resource.

Dr. McGann and his team have literally saved my life more then once in the past 13/4 years. I have had multiple unexpected emergencies, and they have been responsive, helpful and caring through the entire process. I have and will continue to refer people to this practice. I am truly thankful that I am here today, and much of this is due to their care and promptness in getting back to me when I have had issues.

Everyone that we came in contact were so thoughtful and friendly. Dr McGann spent a lot of time explaining my condition and explained my options. Once we decided in the direction that we both felt worked the best, his staff jumped in to order the appointments for the procedure before we left the office. This was one of the best doctor visits I have ever had.

Dr. McGann is my cardiologist from a heart event hospitalization I had in past. I see him every year. He is an exceptional physician professionally. I am always Impressed with his knowledge, and he listens attentively with respect to what I have to share. Words cannot express the excellent care and support I received from doctor Mcgean cardiologist. He has taken great care of me and created a medical health plan to move me forward and becoming stronger with my heart condition.
