What is Pediatric Gynecology?

Pediatric gynecology is the medical specialty that cares for reproductive system disorders in children and adolescents. Pediatric gynecologists provide services to patients ages 0 to 21, offering continuity of care as patients transition into adulthood. Pediatric gynecologists are physicians with training in gynecology and pediatrics (children's health care). Conditions which pediatric gynecologists may treat include:

  • Infection, rash, or pelvic pain
  • Genital injuries
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Genital malformations
  • Endocrine (hormone) problems, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Menstrual problems, such as precocious or delayed puberty, or amenorrhea (absent menstrual periods)
  • STD prevention

Pediatric gynecologists diagnose gynecologic conditions through patient-reported symptoms, physical evaluations, and blood tests. Treatments may vary depending on a patient's age and maturity. Pediatric gynecologists can develop individualized care plans to best address patients' needs over a period of years. For example, a patient may choose to wait before undergoing surgery or taking hormone medications. Pediatric gynecologists frequently prescribe or order the following treatments:

  • Oral or topical medications
  • Birth control, such as the placement of intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • Menstrual suppression

  • Reconstructive surgery for genital anomalies
