Replacement Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement)

Joint replacement, sometimes also called arthroplasty, is an option when a joint becomes severely damaged by disease or injury. The damaged cartilage of the joint is surgically removed, the ends of the bones in the joint are resurfaced, and a prosthetic is installed. Most prosthetic joints are made of a metal piece that fits into a plastic sleeve so that they glide smoothly. A joint replacement increases stability in the damaged area and decreases pain. The hip and knee are the two joints most commonly replaced, but joint replacement can also be performed on the ankle, shoulder, elbow and even fingers.

Although joint replacement is one of the safest and most reliable medical procedures available, it is still a major surgical procedure. All surgical procedures carry risks, such as infection or blood clots. For this reason, doctors try to help their patients avoid surgery for as long as they can. Taking arthritis medications, losing weight, avoiding high impact sports such as running, taking supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin, or having joint injections may allow a patient to enjoy life without the need for surgery.

After having joint replacement surgery, patients can expect some pain the first few days as they recover. Physical therapy is an important part of recovery, and it can decrease complications and increase future mobility. As soon as possible, returning to low impact sports such as swimming, walking or biking can stretch and heal the new joint. A prosthetic joint can last 15 - 20 years and cannot be further damaged by degenerative diseases such as arthritis, so once it is done patients should be pain-free for many years.

I've never had a doctor + nurse so kindhearted, knowledgeable & thorough, relatable, and genuine before. I usually loathe going to the doctors' office due to doctors + medical personnel dismissing me, rushing through the appointment, and acting like I'm invisible. Not here. My nurse did a very thorough medical history recap with me, and was very compassionate. He made me feel completely comfortable and heard. And then Dr. Magee was very kind. He apologized for taking a little long in his first appointment, and was extremely thorough in examining my wrist cyst that I came in for, and explaining what he thought it was and what might be the best course of action. He ordered x-rays right away, and I had them done within minutes. He then sent a referral for a MRI and I'm already scheduled for it, when usually I wait a long time only to find out my referral was never sent by the doctor. This is the most professional, thoughtful, and thorough medical staff I've ever met! I feel blessed to have chosen Providence and Dr. Magee for my wrist problem, and plan on coming back I end up needing surgery. I feel very confidence with their work.

Dr. Magee was careful to spend extra time explaining my options to me because my decision about which course of action to take depended upon me understanding some difficult medical facts coupled with a personal choice regarding where I would seek related care for part of my condition. While Dr. Magee's services could be administered locally, seeing a specialist for the related condition involved traveling a significant distance during the sometimes difficult winter driving conditions in the area. While not a medical decision per se, it was a decision important to me and one which could have an impact on the outcome of my treatment. It was a difficult decision.

The doctor was very friendly and professional but I waited a long time before I saw him and it was getting late and I at one point offered to reschedule as he had a very busy schedule that day. At the conclusion of my appointment he said that his nurse would be calling about a further appointment which he said would not take as long as getting the last appointment but since that appointment I have heard nothing from that office "no follow up" I did check the chart notes on "mychart" and there is nothing about a follow up there either. Other than that I have no other complaints about the doctor and his staff.

I saw this provider from a referral ~ I didn't call that provider on my own. He definitely related my treatment possibilities to my lifestyle needs and was very clear about the pros and cons of different treatments. I VERY much appreciated that! He saw me as an individual, not just as a shoulder that had been Xrayed. He also spent more time talking to me and trying to understand the entire person than what I have experienced from some doctors.

Dr Magee was extremely helpful. He thoroughly described the MRI results on my left knee and covered the options for treatment. He then spent extra time (using most of his lunch break) to discuss the issues I was having with my back, hips and right leg as well. I live the Providence Health system. I am pleased with it, and have been in every state I have used them in, in every office and hospital. I was so very glad to move back to WA state (from NM) to resume care at a Providence facility once again. In addition, I have found the Colville group to be just as good as the services I was receiving in Spokane.

Dr. Magee was amazingly attentive, empathetic, and medically insightful regarding my need for a second hip replacement. He provided me an alternate referral and reassurrance of much positive feedback. I was extremely disappointed that there was no longer the opportunity for Providence Northeast WA Medical Group, Colville to support hip surgeries.

Everyone I came in contact with was helpful and friendly. I especially like Dr. Magee. He came highly recommended for my knee problems. I did wait a little while after my appointment time to see him but it was well worth it because I know he takes the time to explain things and to answer my questions. Something he does for every patient.

Awesome Dr he is just wonderful to deal with, was honest and upfront . Said I needed surgery, proved after surgery what went wrong worse than MRI showed . Took all the time to fix the issue during surgery to correct the problem . Then explained everything with pictures, follow up care has been been top notch care .
