Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the little round joint that lies in front of the ear between the temporal bone ( the cheek bone) and the mandible (the lower jaw.) Often people use the acronym 'TMJ' to refer to temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder - that is, pain and stiffness in this joint and the muscles around it.
TMJ can cause a wide variety of symptoms related to the movement of the jaw. They can include earaches, headaches, an inability to open the mouth very far, painful clicking or popping noises when chewing or talking, and stiffness or pain in the jaw, face, or neck. Sometimes TMJ symptoms seem to go in cycles, getting better or going away for a while only to come back again. Symptoms can be mild and not very bothersome, or so persistent and painful as to be almost debilitating.
There can be many potential causes of TMJ. An injury or trauma to the jaw, arthritis, or grinding the teeth can all contribute to TMJ. The temporomandibular joint contains a small disc of cartilage that allows it to move smoothly, and this disc can become dislocated or torn. Sometimes the cause is unknown. There are no standard tests for TMJ, and it can be difficult to diagnose and treat.
Mild cases of TMJ may benefit from self-care such as eating soft foods, practicing stress management techniques, and applying ice packs to the jaw. NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen, can be purchased without a prescription and work to reduce pain and inflammation. Some dentists and occupational therapists can suggest stretching techniques for the jaw which may help relieve stiffness. More serious cases may require a form of splinting called a stabilization splint or bite plate, which helps reduce pressure on the joint. Extreme cases may benefit from arthroscopic surgery on the joint.

My son had his wisdom teeth removed on 2/7/19. The office required me to pay them $585 dollars up front, even though I confirmed that my insurance would cover the procedure and they are preferred providers. They stated they would happily issue me a refund as soon as insurance processed the claim. On 2/22/18 I called to ask about the refund because insurance process the claim and I only owed them $25 after insurance. They stated they couldn't issue a refund until they received payment from my insurance company. I provided them with the insurance reference number since they are contracted preferred providers for Aetna, I requested that they expedite my refund. They would not. On 3/6/19 I contacted the office again to ask for my $560 refund and to provide them with the Electronic Funds Transfer reference numbers for the insurance payments they had already received. They still would not process stating, with attitude, that they legally had 30 days to issue me a refund. Deanna asked if I wanted the refund expedited and I said that of course I did, I had already requested that on 2/22/19. As of 3/21/19, I still have not received my refund. When my husband called today, he was told to look for the check around 3/29/19. This is an absolutely unacceptable period of time to wait for a $560 refund especially since this is a preferred provider for my insurance company. To request such a large some up front is disturbing to begin with, again from a preferred provider, but to not issue the refund once they have Aetna's payment and to get an attitude when I have called to inquire is beyond reproach! I hope to see the funds within the time they are currently stating or I will be forced to issue a complaint through Aetna. On 4/2/19 we went to their office to finally pick up a refund check. The check was written for only $531. We were owed $560. Now we start another wait for the remaining $29 owed. This mistake after MANY phone calls and explicitly explaining a refund of $560 was due. They received payment from my insurance company 2/26 yet I did not receive a refund until 4/2 and even then the refund was not for the correct amount. This is the most ridiculous experience I've ever had with a medical office!
