Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Dr Wark may be technically good, but does not communicate well. Trying to get a meaningful assessment of my hearts performance and getting my questions answered was a struggle. Perhaps in his head he's arrived at some interpretation what tests results mean, but he is not inclined to explain them or give me a definitive assessment of what's happening. Leaves me still in a quandary. I get the impression if something really critical he'd pay more attention to me, otherwise he's in a hurry to move on.

This doctor does not have very good bedside manner. I waited 3 months for this appointment with my bp going from 190/90- 89/60 and being scared . I then waited 45 min past my appointment which would have been fine. But to be told I don't deal with that go back to your pcp when they are the ones that sent you up to him it's a little frustrating. He didn't try to soothe me at by explaining it nicely . He was gruff . I left and sat in my car and bawled.

I have only needed annual care for the most part in regulating AFIB but have felt I was under the best care with Dr Wark. I respect his professionalism and the friendliness he shows his patients along with the high regards given him by others on staff. I felt privileged to have him as my cardiologist during my 5 yrs living here and wish him the best in his coming retirement.

Liked what I saw and experienced. Everyone was pleasant, professional, and knowledgeable. The doctor explained our situation, what our options were, and answered our many questions. He made us more comfortable with the procedure discussed because we now had more information and a more clear picture of what to expect if we decide to proceed.

Dr. Wark visited me in the hospital and assured me that a systematic approach to discovering my health concerns would provide answers to my condition. The virtual visit was a thorough review of my history and issues related to the current problem. Recommendations for future activities was reviewed and discussed.

I moved here from Texas. I'm seeing these doctors for the 1st time. They have been professional and polite. They're very knowledgeable and I'm sure they have my best interests at hand. I feel very safe with them. Hopefully I can get the rest of the doctors I need and they're just like the ones I'm seeing now.

From the time I was checked into an exam room and the Dr showing up was about 1-1/2 hours. Dr. Was at Hospital. No one told me how long the wait would be. I had the time, but felt my time important as well. I don't know how many other patients were inconvenienced as well. A situation that need improvement

Dr. Wark is slightly more attentive than most In his profession. He Is, however what I have come to expect in a cardiologist in this state. He follows the prescribed procedures without deviation or giving significant thought to the possibility of natural treatments such as the food as medicine approach.

Dr Wark ordered further tests over a week ago and I have not heard from them to schedule. I'm awaiting surgery for a compressed spinal cord and the surgery is dependent on these further tests. Dr Wark was great but I am in a wheelchair until I have back surgery so I think things could be speeded up!

Dr Wark is kind, friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. I was recently at St Pete's visiting a friend and he saw me stopped to say hi and see how I was doing. Pretty amazing he would stop as still in his scrubs so obviously busy. It was very kind of him. Very grateful to have him as my cardiologist.
