CPAP Treatment

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment is a medical treatment for people with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea interrupts breathing during sleep, resulting in lapses of oxygen. Lapses of oxygen may in turn lead to severe headaches, heart problems, fatigue, and poor sleep quality. The CPAP device remedies sleep apnea by forcing open the airway with pressurized air, ensuring someone receives enough oxygen while sleeping. The CPAP device is a mask attached to a machine (with a tube) that takes in air from the surrounding room, filters it, and then pressurizes it. The constant flow of pressurized air treats sleep apnea by keeping the tongue and soft palate from obstructing the throat and airway. Benefits of CPAP treatment include:

  • Improved concentration and focus
  • Reduced snoring
  • Lowered risk of heart disease and stroke
  • Improved mental health

In order to receive a CPAP device, patients must receive a prescription from a physician. Some patients may be asked to complete an overnight sleep study known as a titration study. A titration study monitors patients' sleep using a mask attached to a CPAP machine. The technician may monitor and adjust the CPAP's air pressure throughout the night. The purpose of a titration study is to determine the appropriate air pressure for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (blocked upper airway). Once an appropriate CPAP pressure is identified, physicians or sleep technicians may recommend a specific brand or style of device to the patient for long-term use.

Lung Issues

Every cell in the body requires oxygen to function and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. In order to keep the body's tissues constantly supplied with fresh oxygen and to keep waste from building up, the lungs pump air in and out, even while sleeping or unaware. Unfortunately, diseases and disorders affecting the lungs are some of the most common medical problems afflicting people around the world. Some of the most common lung problems include asthma, COPD, pneumonia, and lung cancer.

Asthma is a chronic disease where swollen, inflamed airways make it hard to breathe. It is often brought on by specific triggers. While asthma is a common condition, affecting millions of people, it can also be serious and even fatal in severe cases. Treatment involves avoiding triggers and using inhaled corticosteroid medications.

COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is the name given to two illnesses that both cause difficulty breathing: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In emphysema, the air sacs of the lungs become damaged, while with bronchitis they become clogged with mucus. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. It is almost always caused by breathing irritants into the lungs, such as smoking or heavy pollution.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or fungi. Most healthy people recover from pneumonia in a week or two, but for some people pneumonia can be fatal. There are treatments available for pneumonia, but the best treatment is to prevent getting sick in the first place. People who are at risk should make sure they get a flu shot every year. There is also a vaccine available for the type of bacteria that causes pneumonia.

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells inside the lung grow into a tumor, destroying healthy tissue. Because it is so difficult to detect lung cancer in early stages when it has few symptoms, it is the deadliest form of cancer, responsible for the most cancer deaths both in the U.S. and worldwide. Most lung cancer is caused by exposure to tobacco smoke, but between 10-15% of cases are not linked to smoking.

Some problems with the lungs are minor and are not cause for concern. However if symptoms have lasted for a month or more, even if they are minor, it is worth checking with a healthcare professional. A cough, shortness of breath, or excess mucus production that lingers for weeks are all worth getting looked at.

Lung Transplant

Patients who have very severe lung disease may need a lung transplant. The diseased lung is entirely removed and replaced with a healthy lung, usually donated by a person who died. Either one or both lungs can be transplanted.

Contrary to popular belief, lung transplant is rarely used to treat lung cancer. It is a more common treatment for patients with other advanced lung diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Lung transplant is a serious operation and is generally used as a last resort for patients who have only a short time to live without surgery.

During a transplant, an incision is made on the side of the chest (for a single lung) or in the middle (for both lungs). Patients may be hooked up to a heart-lung bypass machine, which will do the work of moving blood and oxygen through the body during the procedure. After the diseased lung is cut away from the main airway and blood vessels, the donor lung is stitched into place. Surgery may take as long as twelve hours, and a hospital stay of two to three weeks after surgery is not uncommon. For the first hours or day after surgery, patients use a ventilator, or a machine to help them breathe. Tubes will be inserted into the chest to help drain excess air and fluid. During recovery, physical therapy and breathing exercises are used to help the new lung work as well as possible.

Lung capacity is carefully monitored for several months after surgery. Patients who have had a transplant will also have to take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. These drugs stop the body's immune system from attacking the new lung. The main risks after a transplant are infection and rejection (when the immune system attacks the 'foreign' lung). A healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a diet high in vegetables and lean protein, not smoking, and getting enough exercise, is important to keeping the lungs functioning as well as possible. With proper care, many patients can live ten or even twenty years after a lung transplant.

Dr. Redman never makes me feel uneducated. He listens to what I say and remembers the next visit. He always inquires as to my other overlapping health issues. He is always looking towsrd future treztment of my overall health. I have alot going on and he is very helpful coordinating what test will be coming up next for a certain disease and if it overlapping Dr.Redman has me scheduled. Dt. Refman is awesome!!! He helps me to continue moving forward in a positive manner regarding all my health conditions. I soo appreciate hxving him for 1 of my many doctor's. I do feel blessed and I know I recieve the best care from Dr. Redman.

Dr Redmen is an excellent doctor. He is knowledgeable and interacts well with me, the patient. He communicates well and does not rush through my appointments. My criticism is how horribly long it takes to get in to see him. Making a follow up appointment before leaving his office still requires 4+ months. It's impossible to see him as a pulmonary specialist should anything happens. One can't wait that long, which means either foregoing care or going to urgent care. All Providence specialists are this waywith unacceptable wait times for appointments. Providence please do something about this!

The care Dr. Redman provides is excellent, and I have confidence in him. The only problems I have encountered have been the difficulties in scheduling--I'm given a date to call and schedule a time, but usually at that point there are no times available. When I try to call before the date recommended, I'm usually told that they don't have a schedule available yet. It's catch-22, and I wind up rarely being able to see him annually--it's usually several months after the annual date should be. Somehow the system is not conducive to accurate and timely scheduling.

Normally, I have the best experience with Dr Redmand. This time his answers left me feeling as all the other conversations we have had were pointless. He said I shouldn't feel fatigued all the time which I know sarcoidosis patients often tend to be. He made me question myself as if I should be feeling better than I am. I do not like taking medicine just to take it. I felt very defeated leaving my last visit. And I've never felt like this with him before. I was depressed and just didn't feel heard or like what I'm experiencing is true

My ratings re: phone messages are really about using MyChart messaging. Generally very good response with this provider or nurse. Can't say enough how much I appreciate Dr. Redman. As a specialist monitoring for potential life threatening lung issues, he is diligent and caring. He takes time to listen and communicate. He reviews CT scans himself which gives me confidence with him, rather than simply regurgitating a radiologist report. The only negative is extreme length of time to get appointments with him.

My wife accompanied me on this visit. We both thought It was one of the best, beginning to end. The intake staff were great. The wait time from Intake to seeing the provider was minimal. Dr Redmond has a tremendous "bedside manner" and took a lot of time asking and answering questions about the results of the CT scan on the nodules on my lungs, even showing us images from the scan. He fully explained that there was no Imminent risk and the rationale for the follow-up plan he proposed.

Dr Redman is a gem. He knows my history and has reviewed imaging results prior to coming into the room. I have confidence in his medical knowledge, but it's rare to find someone who is also caring and communicates well with the patient. I leave appointments understanding my status and plan going forward. He takes the time needed to answer questions and explain things. He's cautious but also diligent in monitoring for potential problems. I am so fortunate he's my pulmonologist.

My asthma condition was in severe decline due to the prior care provider's lack of care or interest in her patients. Dr. Redman, on the other hand, is caring, knowledgeable, and has a unique talent of making patients comfortable. Part of Dr. Redmans magic is that he is incredibly approachable. All of his Intutitive skills allow for important communication to transpire. Unfortunately, this has become a rarity in today's medical environment. To summarize, Dr. Redman is awesome!

Dr Redman is an amazing doctor. When I visit him, he always knows my history, understands my condition and provides the best possible solutions that consistently provide good results. He listens to my concerns and takes his time to make sure the visit is productive. I am very fortunate to have him as my pulmonary care doctor and would highly recommend him to anyone who needs that type of care.The receptionist was a little discourteous when I checked in for my visit.

Dr Redman prodes excellent care and consideration. My long term primary care physician retired so I'm still searching to fill that gap. A very significant health event occurred since my last appointment with Dr Redman...I'm now residing permanently in an assisted living facility. When he entered the exam room he obviously had familiarized himself with my current health status since he he knew when he walked in. He listened to me and I felt reassured
