Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

  • A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
  • A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
  • Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

  • Age
  • Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
  • A family history of heart attacks
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

This appointment was for a normal cardiology checkup after an aortic valve replacement. All was good there. There was an underlying issue concerning upcoming prostatic cancer surgery. Dr. Li immediately recognized the need for him to be able to provide the prostate surgeon accurate and updated information regarding my heart. He went out of his way to have an echocardiogram scheduled at the soonest possible time. Echo was scheduled for the following morning. Dr. Li called that afternoon with very positive results shown by that echo. Much appreciate Dr. Li's rapid response to a situation I had not really considered prior to my appointment with him.

I recently found out the left side of my heart is only working at 19% & Im in heart failure. Dr. Li went over my records from the hospital and suggested I try 3 new meds and come back for more tests in a month to see if the heart improved. The idea of waiting a month & possible things that can go wrong scared. I told Dr. Li & he saw & heard my fears & came up w another plan of action to give me some piece of mind. I was so greatful! I felt heard. He will never know how much I appreciated this. I have a 5 yr old & the fear of not being here to raise her has me terrified. He is a great Dr. All the nurses and staff were very friendly too.

Dr. Li is ALWAYS thorough and ALWAYS listens to me and answers all my questions and concerns. The receptionists are always nice. Regardi g appointment making, the past couple years have been hard. I will call MONTHS in advance for my regular appt., and it seems the soonest I can get my appt is literally 3 or months away from my call. Thats the only complaint. However, its nobodys fault really. Just lots of patients.

Dr. Li is the cardiologist I have been seeing for several years. I have great confidence in him and appreciate his care, concern and knowledge of my condition and his treatment of it. I underwent open heart surgery this year and he was involved in the selection of the surgeon, the choice of hospital for the surgery, and follow up rehab afterwards. I could not ask for better treatment and I greatly appreciate him.

Dr. Li is my cardiologist, whom I have been seeing at least annually for several years. He recently performed a heart procedure and did an excellent job. He also referred me to a heart surgeon at a major hospital for open heart surgery and followed up post surgery with calls to me and my spouse concerning my health and how the surgery turned out. He Is an excellent doctor.

Dr. Li is and his staff are in the top 5% in all aspects of the health care they provide. If I had to rate them in one word I would use the word "exceptional". If all health care providers and their infrastructure were even close to the quality of Dr. Li and his staff, health care in America would be in far better shape than it is.

Dr Li is a very conscientious & considerate physician who has treated me with respect & patience. He always answers my questions & shows concern for my welfare. He calls me by my first name which makes me more comfortable. That is nice since going to a cardiologist office is nerve wracking.

Dr Li is very knowledgeable and caring towards us. He takes the time to explain medical concerns with us. He lays out a plan of action with us and discusses the positves and negatives regarding the problem. We are very comfortable having him as my husband's cardiologist.

Within the last three months I had some health issues related to heart pains. They was resolved in a very satisfactory way by Dr. Li and his associates. I don't believe I could have asked for more or better attention. Thanks to all of them for their skill and caring.
