Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

  • Age
  • Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
  • A family history of heart attacks
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a device implantation procedure that reduces the risk of stroke for patients who have atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats out of rhythm. Atrial fibrillation causes blood to collect in the left atrial appendage, a small sac located in the top left chamber of the heart. The blood that collects in this appendage can form clots and cause stroke when pumped out of the heart.

To implant the device, a long, flexible tube, called a catheter, is inserted into a large vein in the groin and advanced to the heart. Once the tube reaches the left side of the heart, X-ray is used to guide a thinner catheter into the left atrial appendage. The tiny device is then passed through the tube and into the appendage. When the doctor has made sure it is in the right place, she takes the catheter out, and the procedure is completed.

This minimally invasive procedure usually requires a hospital stay of at least one day. Normal activities may be resumed within a few days. About 45 days following implantation, a test will be done to determine whether the device has closed the left atrial appendage. Check-ups have to be performed every year to make sure the device is in place.

Dr. Philip Massey is simply an outstanding cardiologist. He is thorough, professional, and genuinely interested in his patients and takes the time necessary to understand what care and medications are needed for his patients. He diagnosed atrial fib a good dozen years ago, attempted to control it with meds, and then ordered a pacemaker which I have had now for approximately 8 years. Without question, he has clearly extended my life and qualify of living and I so appreciate the care this outstanding physician has provided personally to me. Clearly one of this region's best doc!

Dr. Massey has been my Cardiologist for over a decade now and I have come to appreciate his professionalism and demeanor whenever I have had contact with him. Dr. Massey is awesome and has a great bedside manner. My mom was recently in the hospital at Valley Medical Center for heart related issues and the on-staff cardiologist was not nearly as personable and informative as Dr. Massey. Dr. Massey treated my dad for heart related issues for several years and probably extended his life by a good five years. I know Dr. Massey will do the same for my mom now that she has heart related issues. I love Dr. Massey!

I feel very fortunate to have a Team like this. Dr Massey is the best in my opinion. He listens, he advise, he has always made me feel respected and comfortable. We talj also about families~ he appears genuinely interested. This Doctor is the best and so is his Team. Always courteous and professional just like the front desk. Dr Massey is easygoing and has a pleasant demeanor. Listens well and answers/explains questions well. He was also my wife's Cardiologist before she passed away seven years ago. When my previous cardiologist left PacMed, I immediately contacted Dr Massey's Office to inquire if he was accepting new patients as he had taken such good care of my wife. Fortunately, he was accepting new patients and I'm very pleased with his care.

It was a very helpful and excellent appointment. Dr Massey has been a great cardiologist for me and especially with dealing with my atrial fib condition. At this appointment he was extremely helpful for my getting a better blood thinner, which has some very good benefits if I get a severe case of C-19. Throughout my years with Dr Massey as my cardiologist, he's been encouraging, supportive and an excellent cardiologist.

Dr. Massey is MY cardiologist and I have been seeing him for over a dozen years now and he has managed to keep me going better than I have thought possible! (Might sound a little strange but he has diagnosed some heart problems that he has corrected and continues to monitor my well-being with concerned interest which I truly appreciate.). Always a joy to spend that half-hour with him every 6-months . . . .

I've known Dr. Massey for several years and found him to be very excellent doctor and a very caring individual.
