Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury medicine is a branch of medicine that treats damage to the spinal cord from an injury or a nontraumatic myelopathy, which is any disorder that affects the spinal area. The spinal cord is a section of nerve tissue protected by the vertebrae (spinal bones). Trauma to the spinal cord, typically caused by compression or bent vertebrae, prevents the body and brain from communicating. This can result in pain, loss of sensation, and impaired physical function and movement. Acute spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are a leading cause of permanent disability. Spinal cord injuries may develop from accidents or myelopathies, disorders that provoke spinal compression. Traumatic incidents such as falls, sports injuries, vehicle accidents, and bullet or stab wounds can cause an acute spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury medicine seeks to stabilize the spine and to alleviate the symptoms of spine damage. Practitioners of spinal cord injury medicine are called spinal cord injury specialists. Spinal cord injury medicine is an interdisciplinary field, meaning physicians of various specialties may be trained to treat spinal cord injuries.

Damage to the spinal cord may initially be diagnosed through X-ray, MRI, or CT scans. Patients can also undergo spinal exams to evaluate their sensory ability and strength. Injuries to the spinal cord can be complete (no feeling or sensation) or incomplete (some feeling or sensation remains). Conditions spinal cord injury medicine specialists may treat include:

  • Paralysis, such as paraplegia (loss of function in the legs), or quadriplegia (loss of function from the neck down)
  • Spine fracture or trauma, which can lead to impairment and/or significant pain
  • Spinal infections
  • Myelopathies, such as herniated disks, spinal tumors, and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory diseases such as ankylosing spondylosis, and degenerative conditions like Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS)

Treatment for spinal cord injuries often involves surgery, either directly after an injury occurs or at a later date. Surgery for spine injuries is intended to ease spinal compression and stabilize the spine. Surgical procedures can involve shifting vertebrae, removing bone, or altering spinal placement with implantable devices. Patients with significant spinal trauma may require urgent surgical intervention.

Surgical treatments can be complemented by rehabilitative physical therapy to improve mobility. Spinal cord injury specialists also treat complications arising from a spinal injury, such as respiratory or bladder conditions. Some patients with spinal cord injuries may require lifelong treatment. Spinal cord injury specialists aim to help these patients successfully adjust and lead an improved quality of life. An emerging treatment for spinal cord injuries is neural prosthetics, which replicate patients' lost nerve function. Neural prostheses may be used as artificial body parts or assistive devices that patients may cognitively control. Other assistive devices include wheelchairs and scooters.

Spinal cord injury specialists may collaborate with physical therapists, radiologists, neurologists, urologists, and orthopedists.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to Dr. Michael Erickson.After a work-related injury, I suffered for more than three and a half years from increasing pain in my arm, without any neck pain at all. Because of this unusual presentation, my condition was repeatedly missed, and my health continued to worsen over time.Dr. Erickson was the first and only doctor who carefully listened, thoroughly evaluated my symptoms, and accurately discovered that I had a cervical disc issue pressing on a nerve. This diagnosis explained everything and truly changed my life. Without his attention and expertise, my condition could have continued to seriously affect my health and quality of life.What I appreciate most about Dr. Erickson is not only his medical knowledge, but also his humanity. He treats his patients with respect, preserves their dignity, and makes them feel valued and heard. Dr. Erickson seemed rushed and inattentive the minute we met (which was the first time). It was an 8:30 am appt, to which I was early. He showed no interest in me as a person, as someone concerned about my health condition. No empathy at all. Barely looked me in the eyes. His quick exam and his looking through my xray reports did lead to better findings than I had expected, which was good. He did explain those results with me but in what I felt was the shortest most minimal way he could and then he just shot out of the room. I will not return to this doctor and I will let my PCP know this.

Fr. Erickson treated my issue (cortisone shot) as a diagnostic approach so he could best see how to treat my knee pain going forward. This was brilliant! I walked in with sharp, shooting pain and left with relief (and this has continued). He also (in the past) had recommended my current knee surgeon, another pain mgmt MD for hip shots that he dies not administer, and my physical therapist -all are excellent. I am grateful to have such an awesome care team.

Everything seemed OK. Dr. Erickson is obviously very busy and he moves very quickly. Both times he had a resident in observing, which was totally fine. But I felt that the resident was more helpful and answering my questions. He's just very quick he's in and he's out. I felt like I had taken a number. I took it. My concern as far as my knee injections were taken care of but it was a very matter-of-fact experience

When I first entered the office, I was given a three page questionnaire to fill out. I didn't even get a chance to complete the first half of the first page before I was told that it wasn't necessary, after being told that it was.When I saw the doctor, he was very brusque. He seem distracted. He talked over me. And he appeared not to think my questions were important or significant.

Saw the Fellow for intake and treatment. He did a very good job of interviewing me and explaining the needed treatment. He respected my knowledge and spoke to me clearly without being condescending. Dr. Erickson joined us participated.in the procedure. Whatever fears I had, were allayed by both physicians. I am grateful for their help with my painful knee.

I would have liked a little more information on what to expect post cortisone injection and activity level, He was excellent a t followup communication via MyChart.
