Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Dr Giese was first recommended to me by my wife three years ago. I found him to be super friendly, knowledgeable and easy to communicate with from the very start of our relationship. Dr Giese discovered and recommended my cataract surgery last year and it's been a very positive experience. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr Giese to anyone in need of optometric care, he has to be the very best I've encountered in 60+ years. PacMed should double his salary and still make tons of money from his loya clientele base!

I very much appreciate that Dr Giese is very knowledgeable about my full health care situation-for instance, meds prescribed by other physicians and also CPAP equipment have caused me to have very dry eyes- He responded by prescribing med which counteracts that, plus recommended over the counter items and even recommended dietary supplement-all of which very much helped me-not all care givers are so conscientious about knowing their patients' full history.

This was my first visit with Dr. Giese. However, I was seen by pulmonology several years ago thru pacmed. I was experiencing difficulty in obtaining my cpap supplies and needed to see pulmonology to reinstate my authorizations for same. Dr. Giese was extremely well informed about my record and we were able to discuss my current pulmonary health as well as my cpap necessity. I felt like I was being seen by a consummate professional.

Dr Giese is my eye care provider. I can see why he was voted "Top Doctor". He not only educated me In detail that was easy to understand to the degree of vision loss was such after my PVD operation. The appointment was as normal; I was seen in a timely manner, everything went as expected, Dr. Giese noticed a slight change In my vision during the eye tests and wrote a new prescription. He also updated me on my cataract and said It Is still not at the stage requiring cataract surgery. He is always very professional and Interested In keeping my vision as good as possible.
