Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the little round joint that lies in front of the ear between the temporal bone ( the cheek bone) and the mandible (the lower jaw.) Often people use the acronym 'TMJ' to refer to temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder - that is, pain and stiffness in this joint and the muscles around it.

TMJ can cause a wide variety of symptoms related to the movement of the jaw. They can include earaches, headaches, an inability to open the mouth very far, painful clicking or popping noises when chewing or talking, and stiffness or pain in the jaw, face, or neck. Sometimes TMJ symptoms seem to go in cycles, getting better or going away for a while only to come back again. Symptoms can be mild and not very bothersome, or so persistent and painful as to be almost debilitating.

There can be many potential causes of TMJ. An injury or trauma to the jaw, arthritis, or grinding the teeth can all contribute to TMJ. The temporomandibular joint contains a small disc of cartilage that allows it to move smoothly, and this disc can become dislocated or torn. Sometimes the cause is unknown. There are no standard tests for TMJ, and it can be difficult to diagnose and treat.

Mild cases of TMJ may benefit from self-care such as eating soft foods, practicing stress management techniques, and applying ice packs to the jaw. NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen, can be purchased without a prescription and work to reduce pain and inflammation. Some dentists and occupational therapists can suggest stretching techniques for the jaw which may help relieve stiffness. More serious cases may require a form of splinting called a stabilization splint or bite plate, which helps reduce pressure on the joint. Extreme cases may benefit from arthroscopic surgery on the joint.

I had to wait longer than usual for my appointment however the doctor was taking care of an emergency that came before my appointment. I KNOW that if it were me that needed emergency care he would have done the same for me! This was a follow up visit so to speak, as he is not my primary care physician. However I see him at least once a year I believe, all helping me keep my prior back injury, resultant back surgeries, ongoing pain and spasms, physical therapy, working efficiently...successfully. I had finished another round of physical therapy due to a severe muscle spasm event and I appreciate being able to see Dr. Danielson again helping me keep on track physically. I am working again, with guidelines that are making my daily life nearly pain free and doable! I would recommend Dr. Danielson to any one with my issues. He also is giving me a "note" for my boss concerning my job.

This provider is very knowledgeable and discussed good recommendations. This was my first appointment with this provider and gathering my medical history regarding my condition was involved. The provider asked questions to clarify, although the questions were somewhat rapidfire. At times, it felt like the provider was attempting to catch me fabricating my condition. This provider also shared information and recommendations about things that I'm already doing In an attempt to help with my pain, although he didn't stop talking and listen when I attempted to say I've already been doing some of his recommendations. I am very pleased with the x-rays this provider ordered because it was finally verified that I have suffered a rib fracture which explains the pain I have been dealing with.

Dr. Danielson was an excellent listener. He understood and I felt he cared that I am able to walk correctly again. I goofed. Sometimes I don't speak up or think about something at the time. He checked my pain when I was lying down. For the most part, I have to be standing to feel anything I feel like on my lower hips. I should have said that my lower hips and legs is what stops me from walking in the morning. I wrote that to him later when I saw the word "mild" in the referral. I will try to speak up better in the future. He was excellent. I trust him.

I was blown away at how prepared Dr. Danielson was for my initial appointment with him and how knowledgeable he was with my conditions. I really appreciated the time he took to prepare for my appointment and for the care he took in explaining things with me.I wish Dr. Danielson could be my primary doctor for my back issues. Dr. Danielson is so understanding and he explains things so well. With my lower back hurting so bad for many years he is the only Doctor that doesn't just shove me through or pass me on to someone else.. When I come out after my appointment feeling like finally someone who explains things to me so well and feeling good that progress just maybe happening. Doctor Kirk Danielson was very caring and thoughtful of my condition. He took his time to explain everything he was doing. And He was very gentle as to not cause me anymore pain. He did everything he could to find the reason for my pain. I would recommend him highly. The staff Was very helpful. I left my coat In the exam room When I went to get X-Ray. When I came out of the X-Ray. They had already called me to tell me they had my coat at the front desk. They were very kind and helpful.

I can't say enough about Dr Danielson he listen to me and always explains things so well. With my back problems I have been to several Doctors that seem to think a pain pill and a muscle relaxer is my answer to pain. Since I have been seeing Dr Danielson I have seen so much more improvement in my back and I hardly ever need a pain pill or muscle relaxer. He listens to me and explains things better than any other Dr I have seen. He is a big asset to Providence!

Dr. Danielson has managed and directed Physical Therapy ( Phase I Rehabilitation) and now he advises we move to ( Phase II) i.e. Drug Assisted Therapy, to better manage the neck pain due to Whiplash. Dr. Danielson has been proactive in his efforts to improve my quality of life and very sensitive to my neck related injuries.

This doctor was knowledgeable about my condition and had referred me to physical therapy.He discussed what else we could do.for improvement. Pretty much, there are no surgical options, and he knows that I don't want to go there. It's possible that injections could help.the pain, but I'm a scardy cat.I'm confident of his knowledge and explanations and options. He's very good at explaining things and listening to me.

Dr. Danielson was great!! I had appt for nerve test on right hand. He asked: do you have problems with the left hand also? I said yes. He said: let's test both hands since you're here. I asked: isn't that another hour? He said: maybe, but it will just run into my lunch time, no problem! He was very thorough explaining the technology used, very personable, realistic about outcomes. Just awesome!
