As a neonatologist, my philosophy is family-centered. A premature, sometimes critically ill, newborn traumatizes families in ways that few other life situations ever can. I always strive to reassure families by giving them a realistic, yet hopeful, understanding of the critical and chronic needs of their preterm infant. Very often, medico-legal-ethical issues come into play and empathy is my prime approach.
