Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a kind of minimally invasive surgery using a thin, narrow tube called a laparoscope. Usually performed on the abdomen or the pelvic region, the surgeon makes a few very small incisions instead of one large one.

During the procedure, the surgeon inserts the laparoscope, which contains a light and camera that allows the surgeon to see what is happening inside the body. Then tiny tools are placed through the small openings and used to perform the surgery.

The most common laparoscopic surgery is gallbladder removal, but laparoscopic surgery may also be used for the removal of a kidney or appendix, to treat certain cysts and tumors, for bariatric surgery, for some GERD treatments, or for hernia repairs, among others.

Because laparoscopic surgery only uses a few tiny incisions, the scars are minimal and recovery is easier than with open surgery.

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery, using a tiny opening to get inside the body instead of making a large cut. It uses small tools attached to a thin robotic arm, which is controlled by the surgeon. Robotic surgery may be referred to by the specific kind of robot that is used. The most advanced robot currently in use is called the da Vinci, and surgery using it is sometimes called da Vinci surgery.

There are many benefits to robotic surgery, both for the patient and the surgeon. Robotic surgery allows for more precise movements and increased control during very delicate surgical procedures. This makes performing surgery accurately much easier for surgeons and reduces fatigue. The smaller 'hand' of the robot can enter the body via a much smaller opening, which reduces the risk of infection and scarring and leads to a faster recovery. The robotic hands also contain tiny moveable cameras among their tools, giving surgeons a much closer view of the procedure than would be possible with traditional surgery.

I called this office to schedule a consult prior to a routine colonoscopy which is covered 100% by my insurance company. I asked how much the consult would cost me. The little girl who answered my first call told me I would have to get that from my insurance company. So, okay, I called the insurance company. They said the consult would be applied to my deductible, but not paid by them. Then they said they could not tell me how much the doctor's office would charge me without a five-digit code from the doctor. They put me on hold to call the doctor, but the office did not answer. So I called the doctor's office back and got a different teenage girl. I explained that I was asking the price that I would be charged, as I had already found out from my insurer that I would be paying for the whole cost of the consult out of my pocket. The little girl told me the only way I could find out what the consult would cost me was to have the consult, so the doctor could then give the office the procedure code. I explained over and over to the child that we already knew what the procedure was, and that I only wanted to know what I would be paying for the consult that is required prior to scheduling the procedure, but she didn't understand that whole concept. I finally asked for a supervisor, and guess what? The supervisor wasn't in. Needless to say, I gave up and called another doctor, who (surprise, surprise) understood what I was asking and told me what my out-of-pocket would be. How can you run an practice like this, with multiple doctors in multiple locations performing complicated and expensive procedures, and not have office staff who can engage in normal conversational exchanges and provide simple answers to simple questions like, "How much money should I expect to pay for this visit?" I see this doc has good reviews, but this sort of incompetence (I hope it was merely incompetence, and not dishonesty) on the part of his staff makes me question how trustworthy the whole practice is. This guy is horrible.  I was referred for an infection sebaceous cyst.  Any medical web page will tell you this is a local anesthetic and done in the office.  He wanted to admit me in the hospital with is not in our plan and wanted to give me anesthesia.  He also wanted to have a nurse come to my home and change the dressing once a day.  I would not go to this guy to have a finger nail cut.
