Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the outer layer of the skin using chemical solutions, like glycolic acid and phenol. Although most commonly performed on the face, this non-surgical procedure may be done on the neck and hands as well. Chemical peels can treat the following:

  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Rough skin
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Acne

Before the procedure, a skin evaluation is done to determine which type of peel will produce the best results. Dark skin tends to respond well to light peels, while severely sun-damaged skin will likely benefit from a moderate or deep peel. Pre-treatment creams and sunscreen need to be applied every day for several weeks prior to the procedure. Doing this may help shorten the healing process.

During the peel, the area to be treated is cleaned thoroughly, and the chemical solution is applied on the skin for several minutes, which produces a stinging sensation. A neutralizing agent is then used, and the stinging sensation gradually goes away. For more intense peels, a cool compress may be placed on the area to relieve any stinging or burning, or the solution may be applied in intervals to limit exposure to the strong chemicals.

Following a light peel, there will be redness and swelling, which typically fade in a few days. Swelling after a moderate or deep peel may last for a week, and mild redness may continue for a few weeks. To help improve the final results of a peel, treated areas must be kept cool, moisturized, and protected from sunlight.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where the sweat glands become overactive, leading to excessive sweating. It can occur in just one area, such as the armpits, feet, or hands; or it can be general sweating over the entire body. Hyperhidrosis can happen to people of all ages and genders. It is estimated that the condition affects as many as 3% of all people, but many are never diagnosed because they are too embarrassed to talk about their symptoms with their doctor.

When excessive sweating is the main complaint and is not related to any other condition, it is called primary hyperhidrosis. There is no known cause, but it does tend to run in families. Secondary hyperhidrosis is sweating that is caused by another medical condition, such as anxiety, cancer, hyperthyroidism, or menopause. Sometimes treating the underlying condition can improve this type of sweating.

There are tests doctors can use to diagnose hyperhidrosis. One involves simply soaking up the perspiration with paper and then weighing the paper to measure how much extra sweat is being produced. Another test, called the starch-iodine test, involves covering the body with powder. This powder turns blue in any areas where sweat is produced.

Treatment depends on the severity of the hyperhidrosis and the areas affected. Some options are:

  • Prescription antiperspirants, which contain aluminum chloride and work by plugging the sweat ducts. This signals the sweat glands to decrease sweat production. They work for moderate cases of hyperhidrosis and are relatively affordable.
  • Lontophoresis, a procedure that uses small amounts of electricity and a tray of tap water to decrease production of sweat glands in the hands or feet.
  • Botox, which can be injected into the nerves that control sweat glands in the underarms.
  • Sympathectomy, a surgery for severe cases that can be performed to cut the nerves that stimulate sweat production. Sympathectomy is most effective for hyperhidrosis of the hands. It may cause new symptoms of sweating elsewhere on the body.
  • Surgery to remove sweat glands, most often in the underarms.

Hyperhidrosis is a serious medical condition that causes both physical and emotional distress. Treatments are available, and support groups exist to help patients cope.

Skin Issues

The skin is the largest organ in the body, protecting and covering the more sensitive inner organs. Considering its size and that it is constantly exposed to the elements, the skin is usually relatively problem-free. However that doesn't mean that issues don't come up from time to time that might need the help of a professional. The most common skin issues that people seek medical help with are cosmetic issues, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin growths.

Professional cosmetic skin treatments exist to treat wrinkles, scars, dark spots, remove excess hair, tone and tighten skin, and otherwise improve the appearance of the skin. They may use lasers, light therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or many other forms of skin treatment.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, most commonly on the face or back. The clogged follicles can then become infected and inflamed. Treatments include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and retinoid creams.

Eczema is dry, sensitive skin that causes an itchy red rash, often in response to specific triggers. It is common in childhood but can sometimes last into adulthood. The main treatment involves keeping skin well moisturized.

Dermatitis is the medical name for any kind of skin inflammation or rash. Rashes can happen because of an allergy or contact with an irritating substance. They may be red, itchy, or even painful. They are often treated with antihistamines or moisturizing creams containing cortisone.

Psoriasis is patches of thick, red skin that is covered in silvery scales. It is often itchy and sore. Psoriasis is thought to be caused by an immune disorder, and it runs in families. Psoriasis is not contagious. There is no cure, but there are medicated creams available to treat the symptoms.

Skin growths, including warts and moles, are usually not serious. However, some skin growths should be examined by a doctor to make sure they don't cause problems in the future. Warts are harmless, rough, bumpy growths caused by a viral infection. They occur most often on the hands and feet. Because they are caused by a virus, they are contagious. Moles are brown or black spots that are sometimes raised slightly from the surface of the skin. They happen when clumps of pigment cells form in a cluster instead of spread out. Moles are harmless except that they are more vulnerable to cancer than other parts of the skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and its risk increases with sun exposure and fair skin tone.

Skin issues can be embarrassing or irritating, but most are minor and can be treated without serious problems. Some, however, can be a sign of a more significant issue, so it is important to see a doctor for anything out of the ordinary.

Dr. Minzer-Conzetti is surely a skilled, competent physician. I asked for an appointment so she could examine and diagnosis a spot on my left cheek that had been slightly tender to the touch for about a month or more (and which I thought might be some skin cancer.) She did not see anything causing the irritation, which I found to be slightly odd because I am not imagining this. She could not explain to me why I was feeling this. Perhaps this is my failing. But, becasue I have never had anyting like this on my face or body and it has not gone away after several weeks, I was left feeling slightly frustrated and unsatisfied about her not knowing what it was.On a very positive note, I mentioned some mild scabbing on my scalp where some pre-cancerous cells were discovered about 10 years ago, and she examined that area and did see some cause for concern, warranting cryogenic treatment (liquid nitrogen.)On balance, I am quite pleased with, and greatly appreciate, Dr. Minzer-Conzetti's care and thoroughness - recognizing a condition that could be life-threatening.

Dr Karen Minzer is so great, I followed her from her last practice to this one. SHE and her medical staff are wonderful. There is one kind person who really cares when one calls to make an appointment. He is kind and reasonable. There is another one who is so mean, I told the doctor about him this time. He was adamant I could not talk to the doctor and had to write to her in My Chart, did not take a message for the medical staff to call me (as I learned is the procedure when so talked to the doctor and her medical assistant) and left me so upset I lost track of what had me worried and I gave up. If this happened to me and I do advocacy for others all the time in my work, I cannot imagine what the response of an elder without advocacy skills would have gone. It is likely they would not come back for care. Dr. Minzer is so compassionate and decent, and this receptionist was the opposite, not a good representation of the clinic or this doctor.

Dr. Minzer Conzetti is wonderful. I followed her from her last practice to this one 10 years ago. She is compassionate and caring. She also runs non-stop, and she is expected to do this, which leaves very little time for appointments with patients. This isn't her telling me this. I see it every time I come in. She does her very best. The pressure on all of your doctors is obvious when I had to make an appointment a year out for my next annual exam so I could get an appointment in the timeframe I wanted. If she had 5 more minutes per patient, I think she would get additional information or questions which the pace of your work does not permit right now. It is something to consider. If even a compassionate doctor is pushed to rush from patient to patient, what happens to the ones who have a less compassionate doctor who does not know them and they don't or cannot speak up?

The medical assistant was absolutely wonderful also, I forget their name but they had fabulous arm tattoos - and the Doctor was very kind, understanding, thorough, careful and considered all my questions without judgement or diminishment. I came in to have some skin things looked at and asked for some education about what to look for in any future concerns and I felt well respected and cared for even though my 'issues' were not, it turned out, to be a problem. The fact that the practice was super busy that day and that everyone was so kind, was an extra bonus. Thank you Providence Dermatology on NE Glisan!

The reason I said that I didn't get what I wanted when I called for an appointment was that I thought I had a skin cancer but couldn't get in any sooner than my scheduled annual follow up a couple of months later. That being said, the clinic did try later to get me in through the wait list, but by then I was fairly sure that It wasn't a skin cancer (which it turned out not to be) and turned down the offer of the visit, which was only about a week prior to my scheduled annual follow up. I have faith In Dr. Minzer's expertise and would recommend her to any one who asked me.

I was seen by Dr. Minzer-Conzeti fairly promptly after being led to the exam room and her assistant conveyed intake information and briefly reviewed my health history. Dr. M-C was cordial and engaging, and efficiently addressed the issues prompting my visit. She assessed the suspected skin condition and formulated a plan, then proceeded to execute that plan. In summary, the entire experience left me Impressed by and appreciative of her diagnostic skills and acumen. The doctor did everything I had hoped she would, and left me feeling that I was in capable, skilled hands.

Dr. Karen Minzer-Conzetti is a great Dermatologist, and I feel comfortable with her and her staff is great too. During my yearly exam, I complained about a itchy spot, and Dr. Minzer told me what she could do to help, I turned it down at that time, it came to be to much, so I called to get back in. At first they did not have a spot for me until after the new year, which did not work for me, but I told them if I could get in before the end of the year, it would be much better. A week or so later, I got a call and they got me in the next day. Very helpful for me.

When I scheduled an appointment, the earliest was in July 2024, BUT I asked for any earlier openings and they were able to fit me in, in January 2024. It was a relief to learn that an unusual, bi-colored growth on my neckline was not "bad" and was easily removed with liquid nitrogen. She also removed a large black plug that was on my torso that was concerning me. And she was able to give me a full-body exam (very thorough) and discuss at a few other patches of skin. I am really impressed with her attention to detail and ability to communicate.

As I sat in the examination room I had the opportunity to staff chatter and I must say it was clear to me there was an amazing harmonious environment it appeared that many of the staffed enjoyed working with each other the professional interactions were frankly surprising to lesson to them ask for clearatity relating to concepts before he or she reported back to the patient...In my life experience it was rare to see what appeared to be a productive and seemingly very efficient medical environment with personality...Absolutely refreshing..

Overall I was happy to walk away without concerns about my skin. It had been 30 years or more since I'd seen a dermatologist & I had a few questions & concerns that I wanted to address. It was a long waiting line for an appointment & another wait when I got to the office, but all in all I am just happy she didn't discover anything that required another visit. I was given a prescription for a topical cream she suggested me using. It was not covered by insurance, but I filled the prescription anyway & have started using as suggested.
