Chemical Peels

Chemical peels remove the outer layer of the skin using chemical solutions, like glycolic acid and phenol. Although most commonly performed on the face, this non-surgical procedure may be done on the neck and hands as well. Chemical peels can treat the following:

  • Age spots
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Rough skin
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Acne

Before the procedure, a skin evaluation is done to determine which type of peel will produce the best results. Dark skin tends to respond well to light peels, while severely sun-damaged skin will likely benefit from a moderate or deep peel. Pre-treatment creams and sunscreen need to be applied every day for several weeks prior to the procedure. Doing this may help shorten the healing process.

During the peel, the area to be treated is cleaned thoroughly, and the chemical solution is applied on the skin for several minutes, which produces a stinging sensation. A neutralizing agent is then used, and the stinging sensation gradually goes away. For more intense peels, a cool compress may be placed on the area to relieve any stinging or burning, or the solution may be applied in intervals to limit exposure to the strong chemicals.

Following a light peel, there will be redness and swelling, which typically fade in a few days. Swelling after a moderate or deep peel may last for a week, and mild redness may continue for a few weeks. To help improve the final results of a peel, treated areas must be kept cool, moisturized, and protected from sunlight.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition where the sweat glands become overactive, leading to excessive sweating. It can occur in just one area, such as the armpits, feet, or hands; or it can be general sweating over the entire body. Hyperhidrosis can happen to people of all ages and genders. It is estimated that the condition affects as many as 3% of all people, but many are never diagnosed because they are too embarrassed to talk about their symptoms with their doctor.

When excessive sweating is the main complaint and is not related to any other condition, it is called primary hyperhidrosis. There is no known cause, but it does tend to run in families. Secondary hyperhidrosis is sweating that is caused by another medical condition, such as anxiety, cancer, hyperthyroidism, or menopause. Sometimes treating the underlying condition can improve this type of sweating.

There are tests doctors can use to diagnose hyperhidrosis. One involves simply soaking up the perspiration with paper and then weighing the paper to measure how much extra sweat is being produced. Another test, called the starch-iodine test, involves covering the body with powder. This powder turns blue in any areas where sweat is produced.

Treatment depends on the severity of the hyperhidrosis and the areas affected. Some options are:

  • Prescription antiperspirants, which contain aluminum chloride and work by plugging the sweat ducts. This signals the sweat glands to decrease sweat production. They work for moderate cases of hyperhidrosis and are relatively affordable.
  • Lontophoresis, a procedure that uses small amounts of electricity and a tray of tap water to decrease production of sweat glands in the hands or feet.
  • Botox, which can be injected into the nerves that control sweat glands in the underarms.
  • Sympathectomy, a surgery for severe cases that can be performed to cut the nerves that stimulate sweat production. Sympathectomy is most effective for hyperhidrosis of the hands. It may cause new symptoms of sweating elsewhere on the body.
  • Surgery to remove sweat glands, most often in the underarms.

Hyperhidrosis is a serious medical condition that causes both physical and emotional distress. Treatments are available, and support groups exist to help patients cope.

Skin Issues

The skin is the largest organ in the body, protecting and covering the more sensitive inner organs. Considering its size and that it is constantly exposed to the elements, the skin is usually relatively problem-free. However that doesn't mean that issues don't come up from time to time that might need the help of a professional. The most common skin issues that people seek medical help with are cosmetic issues, acne, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin growths.

Professional cosmetic skin treatments exist to treat wrinkles, scars, dark spots, remove excess hair, tone and tighten skin, and otherwise improve the appearance of the skin. They may use lasers, light therapy, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or many other forms of skin treatment.

Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, most commonly on the face or back. The clogged follicles can then become infected and inflamed. Treatments include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and retinoid creams.

Eczema is dry, sensitive skin that causes an itchy red rash, often in response to specific triggers. It is common in childhood but can sometimes last into adulthood. The main treatment involves keeping skin well moisturized.

Dermatitis is the medical name for any kind of skin inflammation or rash. Rashes can happen because of an allergy or contact with an irritating substance. They may be red, itchy, or even painful. They are often treated with antihistamines or moisturizing creams containing cortisone.

Psoriasis is patches of thick, red skin that is covered in silvery scales. It is often itchy and sore. Psoriasis is thought to be caused by an immune disorder, and it runs in families. Psoriasis is not contagious. There is no cure, but there are medicated creams available to treat the symptoms.

Skin growths, including warts and moles, are usually not serious. However, some skin growths should be examined by a doctor to make sure they don't cause problems in the future. Warts are harmless, rough, bumpy growths caused by a viral infection. They occur most often on the hands and feet. Because they are caused by a virus, they are contagious. Moles are brown or black spots that are sometimes raised slightly from the surface of the skin. They happen when clumps of pigment cells form in a cluster instead of spread out. Moles are harmless except that they are more vulnerable to cancer than other parts of the skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and its risk increases with sun exposure and fair skin tone.

Skin issues can be embarrassing or irritating, but most are minor and can be treated without serious problems. Some, however, can be a sign of a more significant issue, so it is important to see a doctor for anything out of the ordinary.

Dr. Obadiah was confident, intelligent and kind. His entire staff was thorough and friendly and had me in and out very quickly without making me feel rushed. I felt incredibly confident with the Dr.'s experience and knowledge especially because he was able to explain things to me in simple laymen's terms and even brought up some photos and defining characteristics of the spot I had. He left me feeling very confident that the spot was no concern and gave me an educational pamphlet of the ABC's of melanoma due to my family's history which makes me feel confident that he's got his patients health and safety at the forefront of his mind. It was an incredible experience from start to finish that left me incredibly satisfied. I only scheduled at this location due to timing availability's but I would never hesitate to schedule with Dr. Obadiah and his team. The building was easy to get to/locate, plenty of parking available and a wonderful visit from start to finish.

We moved to Portland, and the first time I saw Dr. Obediah he asked me if I was a side sleeper. I answered, "Yes." He told me that he had written a paper about ear sores with side sleepers. He suggested I purchase a pillow with a hole in the center so that when I sleep on my side my ear would fit in the center of the pillow. I did and have not had any problems with sores on my ears. This visit, he asked me about my diabetic health and gave me some Information about Insulin Injections and where I might try to Inject to make my Insulin more effective. Dr. Obediah shows so much Interest In my entire health beyond my skin.

I think this doctor is quite good. He is obviously very knowledgeable about dermatology. I can't figure out if h listens to me or not. I rarely finish a sentence before he's had moved on, but he seems to hear what is important. I leave feeling like he doesn't listen, but he hears everything important that I need to say. I am a slow and careful talker and he's a very fast talker. It creates an odd feeling of not being sure I've been heard, but I get everything I need. I did have to call the office the next day because a medication he told the assistant to order for me wasn't ordered until I called and talked to the receptionist to get a message to his teammates. The Rx was sent over before the end of the day.

Dr. O is attentive, empathetic, and efficient. He knew why I was there -- checking the outcomes from a previous MOHS surgery [looks great] and head-to-toe skin check. I expect to do an all-body check with Dr. O every year due to previous basal-cell carcinomas. I actually look forward to this check-up now, because it sets my mind at ease. The medical assistant was friendly and engaged. She read my chart, asked about current meds/allergies, and also asked whether I would like a chaperone in the room. I didn't need one, but what a lovely and caring option for those who do! I was impressed by the polite cheer of everyone I met in the office.

I trust Dr. Obadiah to very carefully inspect my skin from top to toe during my annual Total Skin Check. Several years ago, Dr. O. Found two sites of basal cell carcinoma on my face. I had no idea that those little red bumps were BCC, and was VERY happy that his thorough inspection had found them at an early stage. He cut some sample cells for lab confirmation then referred me to a superb MOHS surgeon. The whole process including the surgery was painful but top caliber. Now, I go for annual checkup with gratitude for his professional skill. And have become a sunscreen/big hat fanatic also. Thanks, Dr. O.

Dr. Obadiah is cheerful but focused, prepared for the annual total skin check. Exam room is clean, well-lit, calming pale-blue walls. After the assistant updates my chart, Dr. O does a thorough top-to-toe review while communicating his findings to his pleasant, alert assistant. Re-checks old site where basal-cell-carc was removed. Happily, no re-growth. Answers my questions about trouble spots [itching scalp, splitting nails] and prescribes a scalp topical. He declares no cause for concern. My appointment was at 9:20 AM. I was in my vehicle ready to leave the parking lot at 10:40 AM. Most of this time was spent in the waiting room and waiting in my examination room. The exam, though thorough, was quick and then I was on my way. I didn't expect the duration of the appointment, from check-in to release to exceed an hour. I did schedule an appointment for next year before leaving, and this took very little time. If I am able to keep this appointment next year, I will come prepared for a longer wait time as mentioned above. Thank you.

Dr. Obadiah is a fantastic dermatologist. He is thorough and takes the time to answer questions about my skin-related concerns. He also has a great sense of humor and I enjoy his bedside manner. He took extra time in my last appointment for a concerning spot and it turned out to be a small skin cancer; he took care of it right away. Dr. Obediah has always treated me with respect. In fact, I have had sores on my ears for years any previous dermatologists have cut them off because e they thought it was cancer. However, Dr. Obediah explained that head written a peper about my condition and explained to me that because I am a side sleeper, my ear sores are because I sleep on my side. He recommended a pillow that helps with this condition. I purchased it and have not had sores in three years. I appreciate Dr. Obediah and trust him with my care.

The Dermatology group practice, in which Dr. Obadiah Is a principal, was Inundated with patients on the day of my appointment which accounted for an additional 35 minutes of wait time. I did not mind this at all because a visit with Dr. Obadiah Is like a visit with a trusted friend. He determined that a lesion appeared suspicious and this S.C.C. Was ascertained a day later. Over the years he has spotted about 7 S.C.C.s and about 10 less serious lesions. Needless to say I'm grateful!
