I am a nurse referred to Dr. Hott by another physician who convinced me to cancel my scheduled surgery with Dr. Randall Porter at Barrows. Dr. Hott performed a posterior L4/L5 fusion. What a huge mistake! Dr. Hott is very personable and reassuring. After my surgery, he became a completely different person. My pain was never controlled in the hospital post op even though he assured me I would be cared for--I was not. He instructed me to have another physician manage my post op pain concerns as he does not manage my pain beyond a few days. About after 3 weeks, I experienced severe, intermittent, bilateral, mid-back spasms that had me screaming day and night and nearly dropped me to my knees when they hit. I was in and out of my pain physician’s office almost every other day throwing everything he had at this crippling pain. When I finally had my follow up appointment with Dr. Hott, he had no suggestions to resolve my pain. He suggested I might have an infection, but he didn’t know. He did not order any lab tests or offer anything further interventions. A friend of mine of mine suggested a dose of steroids, so Dr. Hott gave me a prescription to try. So far, roughly 7 weeks out, the steroids have kept the spasms at bay. However, I am very concerned that once they are gone, the crippling pain will return. Other physicians have thought I must have had a tremendous amount of swelling to suffer the spasms. I believe that this is a direct result of Dr. Hott’s brutal surgical techniques. I was the first patient of the morning and who knows if he started behind and had a full day so just rushed me along, but my opinion of Dr. Hott’s surgical skills are best conveyed in the word “butcher.” I physically feel like he butchered my back and my body. He nor anyone from his office has ever called me since to check on me and my well-being. I have no idea at this point if he even resolved my original spinal issues because of all the remaining surgical pain. Even if I am completely fine a year from now, I would recommend you find another surgeon—this guy is a heartless BUTCHER! No one should ever experience what I went through regardless of the surgeon’s so-called previous skills.
