Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure done to check on the health of the heart. A tiny, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel through a very small opening, usually in the groin, and threaded through the blood vessel up to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, it can diagnose problems in the heart and perform certain corrective procedures.

A coronary catheter can be used to:

Take blood samples
Inject dye for an angiogram
Check for valve defects
Measure oxygen and pressure levels within the heart chambers
Take a biopsy
Perform a percutaneous coronary intervention, or procedure to clear blocked arteries
Widen narrowed valve openings

Because all of this can be accomplished without the need for open surgery, cardiac catheterization has become a popular option.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

The office girls and MA were so kind, welcoming, and compassionate. I really appreciate Dr. Muelheims, he took my care seriously, he allowed me to be part of the care decision. He was happy and pleasant and made me feel comfortable. Before the appointment I was very worried about my bradycardia but when I left he made me feel assured that all is going to be okay. He also assured me if I had any questions or symptoms worsened all I had to do is call the office and they would be there to help to be seen. I so appreciated everyone there, they made me feel so comfortable and loved. Thank you to all.

Always good to see Dr Murlheims but really want to comment the RN who did my pacemaker check prior to appointment. I have had this done many times and she bar none gave the absolute BEST care I have ever had in this area. She was smart and knowledgeable and did teaching I have never had and taught me things I did not know and I am a provider. I wish I had her name and I hope you take the time to get it from my chart as she was fantastic! Please let her know. She is special.

This was my first visit with Dr. Muelheims for a cardiac issue I experienced back in March. He was the nicest most caring physician I've ever seen. He was patient, understanding, answered all my questions and my wife's questions. The office staff was also excellent. You have a great group of people in your cardiac program. I consider myself a very lucky man to be a patient of De. Muelheims. I trust what he says and feel confident I'm on the right path.

Dr Muelhiems, is a great doctor and he is my angel. I came to him from another hospital with a bacteria on the wires to my pacemaker and in my bloodstream. He did the surgery to remove wires and pacemaker. I'm so grateful to be here with family and friends to this day. He is my hero and want to thank him for all he has done for me. This is my love to all the care givers I had at Providence's Hospital and healthcare personnel. Thank you all so much.

Dr. Mulheims is my Cardiologist and I see him every year, unless something comes up that needs immediate attention. He ordered an ECHO test a few days prior to this appointment and reviewed the results with me during this appointment. He also reviewed my recent bloodwork and current health status overall. He is very thorough, easy to talk to, listens well, and is comprehensive and clearly understandable in his explanations.

Dr Muelhelms is "the best" of cardiologists. Great gentleman and always "on top of things" for me.I also have my pacer monitored at these meetings. The lady technician who made the pacer adjustments was FABULOUS and she really knew what she was doing. A totally competent adjustment person. Sorry, cannot remember her name but she's at Holy Family cardiology on the date that I was there.

I have been Dr. Muelheims' patient for many years. He and his staff have always given me excellent care. I had a bad experience with Providence Hospital in 2023 that, because of scheduling problems due to low staffing, was deleterious to my health. This did not involve Dr. Muelheims or his team. I did not complain at the time because my condition eventually improved.

With heart issues it is unfortunate that it takes around 3 months to see my main heart doctor, but there were other appointments for tests and care leading up to this visit. I did wonder if some might pass away before being able to see the specialist heart doctor. Yet, the care along the way was excellent. It's only the long time factor that was a bit concerning.

This was a follow up appointment after my visit to the ED after my diagnosis of afib. Dr. Muelheims prescribed flecainide for me and then a follow up EKG. Within the same day as the EKG, the result appeared in MyChart. I generally do not expect a call unless some abnormal appears. My visit with him was extremely informative.

I had excellent care with Dr. Muellheims and the complete staff at the Heart Center. Everyone answered my questions and were friendly under very stressful situations. I was totally amazed.
