Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is the use of a special tool called a colonoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end) to examine the inside of the colon and rectum. The tube is typically inserted anally, and it allows the physician to examine the large intestine from the inside. It may be done at any time to diagnose bowel problems, but routine colonoscopies are advised after the age of 50 to screen for colon cancer.

A colonoscopy may be performed to diagnose:

Intestinal ulcers
Polyps
Bowel cancer
An unidentified source of pain or bleeding in the intestine

Patients may be asked to drink only liquids in the days before a colonoscopy, or they may be given an enema to remove residual fecal matter. Before the exam, patients are given medication to help them relax, and then lay on their side on a table. The scope is inserted into the anus and gently moved all the way through the large intestine. Air may be pumped into the intestine to improve the view for the physician. Any polyps that are found will be removed. Then the colonoscope will be withdrawn. A colonoscopy is not usually painful, but patients may feel some bloating or have some cramps right afterward. If patients have polyps removed, they might experience a small amount of bleeding. Any side effects should go away within a few hours.

How do you thank someone who saved my life by going out on a limb at a critical moment?  When Dr. Korn diagnosed me with Crohns Disease at age 22 in 1972 little did I know just how devoted Dr. Korn is to his patients. Months later I would find myself in the ER at the local hospital, bleeding profusely through the rectal area. Crohns had perforated an artery leaving me with an extremely low blood count. Dr. Korn stood his ground while supporting my moral decisions regarding treatment. His efforts to support me, his efforts to stand firm on trying a new procedure to aid my body in producing new red cells led to my recovery after a 21 day stay in the hospital. Dr. Korn has been at my side thru four operations over the course of my life.
My faith in him and his medical skills has seen me though 51 years of battling Crohn's Disease.His guidance, skills, advice has supported me through continual ups and downs. Throughout my liife as a Crohnie, I THANK Dr. Korn for always being there for me. He has never let me down, told me things I was afraid to hear, told me point blank that life with Crohn's would be hard, would be unknown as I aged. All I know is without Dr Korn I would not have reached the age of 73.  Dr. Korn is a man of integrity, a skilled physician, an opened minded human being.
