Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Dr Arden is an extremely knowledgeable humanitarian who shows utmost respect, kindness and gentleness of spirit when talking to the patient. She is well versed and knows the intimate details of helping patients learn, understand, and be able to manage conditions using the least invasive measures and practices natural ways to help heal. I was not given pills to help solve my problem. Dr. Arden skillfully navigated my need to use meditation, yoga, standard daily exercise, weight management thinking, mindfulness and natural supplements to move forward toward wellness. She gave me personal recommendations for venal support hose, follow-up articles, and took pride in using time to explain and help me understand my condition and next steps after the ordered tilt table and sleep apnea tests. My queries were answered with exact responses and she explained about the holistic body/mind/spirit connection of wellness. I've waited over 6 years for a highly qualified and gentle person to help me understand what is happening to my body with extreme inflammation of Lymes and 3 post-Covid conditions that have wreaked havoc on my heart, autonomic nervous system, and body responses to ongoing exposures of stressors. This doctor is an expert and much needed addition to the Providence Health and Services in our underserved population of Southern Oregon. It was well worth the 3.5 hour drive it took from Brookings to Medford to see Dr. Arden and experience her care.

Dr Amelia Arden is absolutely extraordinary! She is extremely intelligent, totally relatable, kind, considerate, caring, patient oriented and professional!! Typically when I see a new doctor, especially when I am worried or ill, I am very tense and uncomfortable. Dr Amelia Arden helped me feel at ease immediately. I have multiple health issues and 74 years old and she took everything in stride and provided me with a feeling of grateful gratitude for being able to see her!! She easily understood my health concerns and targeted exactly what to do going forward and ordered the tests that I really feel I need to have done for my benefit. I had never had an appointment with Emilia Arden before, and after my appointment with her, I wished that I had seen her years ago. My current problem with my lungs has been attributed to one of the heart meds that I have been on for years. I found Emilia to be one of the most knowledgeable PA's that I have dealt with. Dr. Arden was exceptional. I have had many other cardiologists who won't listen to me but instead, are frustrated when I won't take typical medicines (which I have already done all that and been much worse off). I am very healthy but have a tendency toward vasospasm heart attacks. Dr. Arden offered productive advice and gave me more insight than anyone has. I'm glad to finally find a cardiologist who will watch my heart with me and not just be upset with me because I don't follow a standard route but am healthy. I appreciate it more than I can say.

My cardiologist, Dr Emilia Arden is the kindest and most interested professional in what the whole patient is doing. As people we are not notches on a page to click to be sure we've checked key boxes. We are much more who require the time and care of how and why we need a doctor in the first place. I have nothing but very kind, high regards for Dr. Arden who goes out of her way to be sure people like me are cared for, have all questions answered and every aspect of my life is covered so my heart will continue to thrive.

I am incredibly happy to have Dr. Arden as my Cardiologist. I'm not sure I've ever been treated with such respect, kindness, professionalism and concern from any individual doctor in my lifetime. I feel listened to, cared for and the detail with which she attends to explaining the health, daily routine, diet, lifestyle and all aspects of being a person, not just being a patient. Dr. Arden is an exemplary physician and human being deserving of praise and much thanks for all she does for her patients.

Dr. Arden was wonderful. As a patient of open heart surgery, I asked my Redding, CA cardiologist to give me a referral for a cardiologist in Ashland, OR because of living 8 miles south of Oregon border. It is much easier for a 73 year-old patient to travel to Ashland as opposed to Redding, CA, which is almost a two-hour drive from where we live. Dr. Arden was warm, communicative, open, and caring. An excellent first visit. The Staff at Providence is also excellent in my opinion.

Several months ago, Dr. Arden found a blockage in my carotid artery. She did this by simply checking my arteries before I left her office. No one had done this for a very long time. She found the blockage and within 2 weeks I had surgery to remove the blockage. Without her thoroughness, I really believe I would have had a stroke. I think all your doctors should be checking carotid arteries. Simple procedure that could save lives and untold dollars in care.

I needed to see a cardiologist and this was my first visit. It took months to get the visit which I don't appreciate because I was concerned about my heart, however when I got there she was so thorough, answered all my questions explained every test that I had done in the past and going forward what my plan of action will be, I was very very pleased. I am glad that she is now my cardiologist and I know my heart is in the right hands.

I cannot speak highly enough of Dr. Arden! She is THE BEST doctor I have ever had. She is a great listener and advocates for my best health options each time I have needed help. She is the ONLY Doctor I have seen in the last 5 years that is patient, kind and never dismisses me or my needs. She cares, She listens, She acts and I am thankful for her on my care team. She is amazing.
