Headache

Headaches are dull or sharp pains that occur in regions of the head and face. Headaches occur in many different forms and vary in location, severity, and duration. They are not necessarily a sign of an underlying illness and often resolve on their own. However, headaches can present significant day-to-day discomfort. The most common forms of headaches include:

Migraines: one of the most prevalent types of headache, migraines typically last from two hours to three days, causing a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Nausea, sensitivity to bright lights, fatigue, and blurred vision all may accompany migraines. While migraines have no known cure, medications and lifestyle modifications may ease symptoms. Avoiding behaviors that may trigger migraines such as lack of sleep or loud, repetitive noises can improve headaches.
Tension headaches: also known as stress headaches, these headaches are characterized by pain in the upper top part of the head and behind the eyes. Tension headaches are common and have no exact cause; however, certain practices may increase the likelihood of developing them. For example, wearing one's hair up in a tight hairstyle or wearing a restrictive hat can put pressure on the scalp, leading to a tension headache. Other causes of tension headaches may include alcohol or nicotine use, caffeine, teeth grinding, stress, overexertion, and eye strain. Some people find posture improvement, alternating sleeping positions, and neck exercise can alleviate tension headaches. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may also reduce tension-headache pain.
Sinus headaches: this type of headache causes pain in the sinuses, but may progress to pain and pressure in the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. These headaches are often accompanied by nasal congestion, fatigue, and ache in the upper teeth and may or may not be caused by sinus infections or sinusitis (sinus inflammation). Some sinus headaches are allergic headaches, which arise from allergic triggers such as seasonal allergies (pollen allergies) or hay fever, causing sinus pressure and facial pain. Other symptoms of allergic headaches include nasal congestion, irritated or watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Allergic headaches may be treated with antihistamine medications such as cetirizine (Zyrtec). Allergic headaches are common during pollen season, which is usually around springtime.
Cluster headaches: these headaches occur suddenly and cause stabbing, sharp pain from one eye down to the one side of the neck. They are often referred to as the most aggravating and painful type of headaches. Other symptoms of cluster headaches include nasal congestion, droopy eyelid, and enlarged pupil on one side of the face. In the past, it was widely believed that cluster headaches were caused by a bevy or "cluster" of multiple types of headaches, such as a combination of an allergic headache and a tension headache. Medical experts now recognize that cluster headaches are a separate and unique form of headache. Cluster headaches last for around twenty minutes to two hours. They may recur throughout the period of a day or several weeks, but usually dissipate within a month. Treatment for cluster headaches includes over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve). Prescription Prednisone can help with swelling and Verapamil may reduce pain by relaxing the blood vessels.

Living with headaches is challenging; headaches can prevent people from fully enjoying life. Medical treatment and care in avoiding certain triggers can help those with headaches begin to feel normal once again.

She is my angel. I am very thankful for the opportunity to have her as my doctor. I ride 3 or 4 hours one way to see her. Most of the time it takes me a couple days to have 1 30 min appointment because I live a far distance away and I can't complete the trip in one day due to my pain. I save up money for maintenance, gas, food, hotel and always have to find a driver to bring me there. She makes every minute of the pain (back and migraine pain from my horse accident) I endure getting there and back home worth having her as my caregiver and I hope I have the opportunity for her to help me until I can get better. She gives me hope. Before my accident, I worked in maternal fetal medicine as a sonographer for 25 years. My goal is to get better and return to be a positive influence in others lives like Dr. Lui is to me. Thank you

Dr Dongmei Liu is incredible, her treatments are the only thing that keep me up and running . She is like a Reiko master, she intuitively finds the bad spots in my neck and treats them to stop the migraines from coming . She knows exactly where to put the medicine just by feeling with her hands which I believe really have healing powers . She is the only Dr who has ever really cared about me and my condition and tried to help me long term . Therefore even though I live 80 miles away from Swedish, I will be following her another 40 more minutes northbound to the new practice she is moving to . This will increase my drive time to 4-5hours one way but to continue receiving her outstanding care I would pretty much go just about anywhere, that's how good she is .

Dr liu is amazing! She has a wonderful bedside manner, asks pertinent questions and cares about me as a person. The experience of having a Botox injection in office is always handled with care and professionalism. I feel very safe and well taken care of. The support team is very well trained and competent. They always are able to get me checked in efficiently and I never have to wait past my scheduled time and they are very good with scheduling the next injection appointment. Also very helpful with the required documentation for insurance so that there is never down time in receiving the medications I need on a regular basis. I am beyond grateful for my Swedish migraine team! They have made my life with migraines so much more satisfying.

Dr Lui and her staff are excellent at the Edmonds Location and Cherry Hill Campus. I am always treated very well and I could not ask for better care or communication from a Dr. She is very thorough in her work, with my history and pays attention to my care and needs. My headaches have improved and are less frequent. She has helped me deal with and better understand my spasms, pain and the cycle a long with the inflammation. It's hard and frustrating, but it's my life. I'm not dying and I will not give up. With her in my team there is ALWAYS light at the end of the tunnel. So I'm a Timex watch ... I will take that lickin' and keep tickin'! Thank you keeping her and the Edmonds Clinic. I hope she doesn't EVER retire.

Dr. Dong Me Liu provides exceptional care. She has made a tremendous difference in my quality of life. I highly recommend her specifically for treatment of migraines. My negative comments have nothing to do with her care or expertise. The phone systems at Swedish/Providence are extremely frustrating and time consuming. Wait times are so very long. This problem is unrelated to providers, and across the Swedish/Providence system. I am sure that Swedish providers lose patients due to the difficulty navigating the phone system through no fault of their own. I will continue services with Dr. Liu due to her excellent care no matter where she practices, but I am not happy with Swedish/Providence system.

Each appointment with Dr Liu she is intentional about our time together. She is always prepared with my medical history and makes each appointment feel very personal. Dr Liu Is meticulous in her note taking during my appointments. I have had to share her notes with other providers and they are Impressed with the level of detail she puts in her reports. During my appointments she regularly makes me feel as if I am the only patient she has for the day. I drive almost two hours to see her and would drive further to continue to see her. She has been a true blessing to my migraine management

Dr. Liu is extremely caring, thorough, professional, knowledgeable, and treats me with the utmost kindness and listens carefully. I wouldn't want anyone else as my neurologist because I feel that she is the absolute BEST and I've had many different neurologists over the years. She is outstanding and makes me feel heard and she explains things well. She remembers everything and considers issues and treatment very carefully. She is very special and Swedish would be lucky if they could clone her! :-)

Dr Dongmei Liu is the most caring and concerned Dr I have ever seen . Every time I see her she asks me about my body as a whole and understands that one part is related to another part and has influence on the overall health . She doesn't just ask about my migraines, she asks about my neck fusion, my back fusion, my stress factors, my numb feet and whatever else she thinks may be contributing to the problem . She is a miracle worker and makes my life better by her care .

Dr Dongmei Liu is the only Dr. Who has ever really cared about treating my chronic condition long term . If it weren't for her my suffering would be tenfold and my quality of life would be really bad . Dr Dongmei Liu keeps me up and running and just knowing I have her caring for me helps me stay positive and pull through the hard times . She is a miracle worker with her magic hands and her all knowing intuition . Ancient Chinese Secret I guess ! LOL

Dr. Dong-mei Liu is by far the best provider I have ever had. This speaks volumes since I see seven other specialists. Dr. Liu analyzes the root causes of the condition she's treating me for and even gives me advice to help me resolve those problems. I rely on her expertise and advice while discussing my treatment plans from other providers. She cares about my well being, and always provides me with the best holistic approach to improve my health.
