Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is the targeted use of extreme cold to destroy unhealthy or unwanted tissue. The doctor applies the cold on the skin or injects it through a needle to reach the inside of the body, where it freezes away the problem tissue. Cryotherapy is often used to remove minor skin problems such as warts or skin tags, and it is also used to treat some small tumors.

To achieve the cold temperatures needed for cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen or argon gas is passed through a tube, which becomes cold enough to freeze cells on contact. Alternatively, liquid nitrogen can be swabbed directly onto the skin or via a spray, which applies only a specific, small amount to the skin at a time.

Because the area treated is typically very small, cryotherapy is not usually painful. There may be a sensation of cold and possibly some slight discomfort. Cryotherapy is very fast and can easily be performed in a doctor's office. It also doesn't require stitches, because there is no cutting involved. These benefits make cryotherapy a good choice for many issues, including:

  • Common warts
  • Genital warts
  • Skin tags
  • Age spots
  • Some skin cancers
  • Cervical cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Retinoblastoma, cancer that occurs in the eye

Depending on the procedure, it usually takes three to four weeks to heal after cryotherapy. If it was done internally, patients may feel sore or have a small amount of swelling the first day afterwards. If cryotherapy was performed on the skin, patients will have a scab where their tissue was removed. Keep it clean and dry so it can heal.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to examine the inside of the uterus. A thin tube with a camera and light at the end, called a hysteroscope, is inserted through the vagina. It allows the physician to view the cervix and uterine walls. Sometimes, gas or liquid is used to expand the uterus and allow a better view. If necessary, tiny instruments can also be passed through the tube and used for certain procedures, such as taking a biopsy or removing a polyp.

Hysteroscopy is often done to figure out the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding. However, it can also be used to:

  • Identify the cause of recurrent miscarriage
  • Remove polyps or fibroids, non-cancerous growths in the uterus
  • Remove adhesions, scar tissue within the uterus
  • Identify uterine septums, a wall of tissue dividing the uterus
  • Perform ablation, the removal of excess uterine lining

If surgery is necessary, hysteroscopy is often used along with laparoscopy, a kind of surgery performed through small incisions in the abdomen. Tiny tools are passed through the incisions, and the hysteroscope guides the doctors while surgery is performed.

Pessary

A pessary is a device that is inserted into the vagina to relieve symptoms associated with mild to moderate pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which the womb, bladder, or rectum bulges into the vaginal canal. This device is made of either rubber or plastic and is a safe, nonsurgical way to provide support for prolapsed organs.

Pessaries come in different shapes and sizes, and finding the right one can take some trial and error. Before a pessary fitting, patients will be examined and evaluated based on prolapse-related symptoms they may be experiencing, which may include discomfort, urine leakage when sneezing or coughing, and trouble keeping tampons in.

The following tips can help guide the process of finding the right fit:

  • Once in place, patients should not be able to feel the device at all. If there is even slight pressure, patients should let their healthcare provider know, and she will find a pessary of a different size or shape.
  • The pessary should not fall out with sneezing, coughing, jumping, or squatting. While getting fitted, patients should try jumping or squatting to see if the device will fall out. If it does, a different pessary will be inserted until they find one that stays in place.
  • Patients and their healthcare providers should make sure the device is improving symptoms by having a check-up 5 to 15 days after it is inserted. If there is no improvement, patients may have to be re-fitted with a different pessary, or patients may be asked to consider surgical options.

The device should be kept clean to avoid issues like vaginal odor, discharge, or irritation. To clean a pessary, it must be taken out and washed with soap and water. Healthcare providers will instruct patients on how to remove and reinsert the device. If patients are unable to do this on their own, they will need to get it done at the doctor's office at least once every two months.

I came to see Dr. Gordon because I've had a hard time (physical pain and not feeling heard) with another provider at a different provider group. I asked around for recommendations from my friends and received her name as a suggestion/someone with a good reputation. I felt the care I received in this first appointment alone (and only at this point) is significantly better than any experience I've had in the last 12 years living in Seattle from a provider/PCP. I really felt heard, and hopeful. I've been dealing with health issues for the last 5 or so years, and have seen multiple doctors, a naturopath, nutritionists, etc. Dr. Gordon has made me feel the most heard and hopeful about getting my health on track. I left and told friends/family it is clear she is doing a job she enjoys and is meant to be doing. I truly feel cared for, which is honestly rare in my experience in Seattle healthcare.

Dr. Gordon has changed my life. I have been struggling with health issues since cancer at 18. The health system has turned me into an advocate for myself because of such horrible experiences with doctors. I have ptsd when going into the hospital. No appointment/procedure done without tears. Dr. Gordon is the first doctor to make me feel seen and heard. She listened, offered as many options as possible to make sure I was comfortable, and I never had to repeat anything once. Her staff knew every on day of procedure. I never had to remind anyone of anything. She gave me answers and hope. Something I have never experienced in the health care system. I wish I could have her as my primary care doctor for everything.

It's a bit strange that the front desk staff do not acknowledge patients when they walk in and come to the front desk. It's awkward but I think they might just have high turnover. When I go I have to initiate the conversation; I will walk up to them and they won't look up at me unless I say something like "hi, I'm checking in."On the other hand, Dr. Gordon is amazing. She was the first doctor that took my perimenopause symptoms seriously and offered reasonable, actionable solutions right away. It's been a long journey of 4 years visiting 5 different doctors and trying to get support for perimenopause. She listens, is kind, relatable and has great bedside manner. I can't say enough good things about her.

I would give Dr Gordon a 100 out of 10. Feeling extremely lucky to be in her care. She takes the time to listen to my concerns, provides clear and thorough explanations, and makes me feel comfortable during every visit including even the (previously dreadful) colposcopy. Dr. Gordon is not only my doctor, but she also is a friend she listens to me and she takes time to aid to my concerns. It is very important that she cares and not only that the receptionist told me about a procedure that I hadn't known about yet and when I talked to the doctor, she was like oh yes absolutely and I'll tell you. Dr Gordon made time to see me immediately based on my emergent condition, even though I'm a patient of another provider in her clinic. She also proactively advocated for me with another specialist so that I could be seen as promised. Dr Gordon was AMAZING!! I cannot say enough about how wonderful my appointment was. She listened and understood and almost knew TOO much LOL. Dr Gordon is absolutely amazing! I can't say enough about the care I received from her. I've seen at least 3 primary care physicians and 4 specialists in the last 7-8 months, and she is the only Dr who truly listened to me and looked at the entire picture to try to get a solution.
