Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a device implantation procedure that reduces the risk of stroke for patients who have atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats out of rhythm. Atrial fibrillation causes blood to collect in the left atrial appendage, a small sac located in the top left chamber of the heart. The blood that collects in this appendage can form clots and cause stroke when pumped out of the heart.

To implant the device, a long, flexible tube, called a catheter, is inserted into a large vein in the groin and advanced to the heart. Once the tube reaches the left side of the heart, X-ray is used to guide a thinner catheter into the left atrial appendage. The tiny device is then passed through the tube and into the appendage. When the doctor has made sure it is in the right place, she takes the catheter out, and the procedure is completed.

This minimally invasive procedure usually requires a hospital stay of at least one day. Normal activities may be resumed within a few days. About 45 days following implantation, a test will be done to determine whether the device has closed the left atrial appendage. Check-ups have to be performed every year to make sure the device is in place.

I am in awe of Dr Wells for his professional and personal skills in dealing with me as a patient. His technical knowledge and proficiency in dealing with my heart issues is astounding. His interpersonal sills are unsurpassed. He dealt with some rather complex cardiac issues for me, which he handled brilliantly. He also, knowing that my wife and I would be leaving town for an extended period made sure to address a number of follow-up issues in a tight time frame and with complete professionalism, leaving me feeling very secure about my heart issues. He has developed the same culture of professionalism, efficiency and compassion in his clinic's team. I am profoundly fortunate to be in Dr Wells's care. I will recommend him to all my family and friends. His technical expertise, professionalism, interpersonal skills and compassion are unsurpassed.

Dr Wells is an astonishingly accomplished and knowledgeable electrophysiologist. I am in awe of his intelligence, expertise and his understanding of me as his patient. His explaination of issues in making a highly complicated medical decision was clear and easy to understand. More than that, I think his ability to communicate goes beyond just words, to include a real undertanding of me as a person. He has seen me through a number of complex procedures and has gone above and beyond the level of care and the level of understanding I could ever expect. I am very lucky to be his patient.

Dr Wells did an ablation on me in 2015. I was in AFib for several days when I called his office. I took a chance & called his office as I was feeling exhausted & thinking of going to ER for a cardio conversion. They had a cancellation so I took the appointment. Just talking to him made me confident that I was in good hands. A further appointment was made for a cardio conversion, however, several days later my body went back into regular rhythm. Now I will cancel that appointment so another patient gets to use it. Dr Wells connects very well to his patients making them feel heard.

Staff and Dr. Wells were fantastic!! Kind, caring, thorough and careful to carry though with their tastes so that each ones results contributed well to the overall visit reason...to check on my pacer, and how it was working for me. Could not ask for a better group! Dr. WELLS is a really great doc! So grateful for the care I receive ! Left there feeling confident about my pacer, and that the monitoring that is done! Swedish is, and has been excellent for me!

Dr. Wells inserted my defibrillator 10 years ago and I saw him after that until I moved to the Olympic Peninsula. After recently having my defibrillator discharge and not getting the healthcare I felt I needed through Olympic Medical Center, I decided to take the two and a half hour journey each way and see Dr. Wells as my rhythm doctor. Although it took a couple of months to get to see him, I finally got some answers as to why my defibrillator discharged.

It was my first visit with Dr. Wells. What I liked was that he did not rush and made an honest and transparent effort to understand my condition without jumping to any conclusions. At the end of the visit, we both agreed that the best course was to wait and see. In other words, it was not clear from the symptoms what the best course of action was. Overall, I was very happy with the doctor.

I've usually been pleased over the many years with Swedish.. One very bad experience several years ago in Emergency and demands that I come in for check personally when renewing blood thinner when I had been handling by phone for 4 years. Decision to go on Eliquis but SO expensive. Has been very satisfactory however. Have been grateful for heart care by Dr Wells over the years.

Dr Well's provided me with the care options and path forward to deal with my recent 'on-set' Afib. His staff helped me expedite the Heart MRI at Cherry Hill to support timely scheduling of LA Cryo+ESI w/Tee on Table. Professional, no-nonsense approach to my problem making available to me state of the art procedure to address my Issues. Very good support team as well!

Given my age and health conditions, I think the doctor did a good job at presenting the facts to me and my best friend about the Implant device and what my options are. He also didn't rush me to make a decision, but allowed me time to think about it. He also gave me an idea on what the schedule would be for the procedure if I decide to go through with it.

Dr. Wells is a Very patient man! I have been seeing him since being diagnosed with AFIB. We have discussed ablation on multiple occasions and he answers my questions even if they are repeats. It took me awhile to decide on an ablation and he stuck with these past few years until I was ready. Bless his heart and thanks for your patience Dr. Wells
