Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC)

Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) is a device implantation procedure that reduces the risk of stroke for patients who have atrial fibrillation, a condition in which the heart beats out of rhythm. Atrial fibrillation causes blood to collect in the left atrial appendage, a small sac located in the top left chamber of the heart. The blood that collects in this appendage can form clots and cause stroke when pumped out of the heart.

To implant the device, a long, flexible tube, called a catheter, is inserted into a large vein in the groin and advanced to the heart. Once the tube reaches the left side of the heart, X-ray is used to guide a thinner catheter into the left atrial appendage. The tiny device is then passed through the tube and into the appendage. When the doctor has made sure it is in the right place, she takes the catheter out, and the procedure is completed.

This minimally invasive procedure usually requires a hospital stay of at least one day. Normal activities may be resumed within a few days. About 45 days following implantation, a test will be done to determine whether the device has closed the left atrial appendage. Check-ups have to be performed every year to make sure the device is in place.

Appointment was for an ER visit. Instructed to see cardiologist within 2 weeks. Unable to schedule in 2 weeks due to MD's lack of open appointments. No problem with me having the appointment so far out from ER visit. Loved seeing my doctor's face without a mask. I am so tired of not being able to see other providers face. There is a connection lost when masks are worn. I am hard of hearing and with a mask I cannot read lips or facial expressions. My doctor was wonderful in communicating with me and I felt very cared for. She did an EKG which I thought was very good follow up to make sure my heart was without change after injury to my chest from a fall. Both she and the person who did the EKG were so warm and caring. I left the office feeling good about my experience.

I started trying to get a referral to this proviIder in October 2024. I was initially scheduled for January 2025 but the office called to reschedule my January appointment to April. It took a long time to get the appointment. When the day finally arrived, I sat in the waiting area longer than expected. It looked like employees were returning tho the office late from lunch. The person who called me back to the exam room was abrupt and set a negative tone. The provider however was very positive. She instilled a sense of confidence in me. She seemed very competent and capable. I am glad that I was finally able to meet her and I am proceeding with care given her advice.

Dr. Warner is a thorough and insightful cardiologist. I had an abnormal EKG that indicated that I had a previous heart attack. That was a weird finding because I have never had angina or other cardiac problems. I went to see Dr. Warner because we had a lot of cardiac deaths in my family for people in their 70s and I will be turning 70 in July. Dr. Warner suspected that the EKG finding may have been due to the fact my heart is lower than other people's in my chest cavity. The ultrasound for my stress test proved her right. I have not had an infarct and no significant stenosis. I am very happy with the care that I received and her detailed reports.

She has already ordered necessary tests AND scheduled a followup appointment with her at conclusion. I had a appointment for my annual check up. I deccided latwrI had an appointment for my annual check and I had some questions for her, since I had just turned 90. She had no room Iin yhe set Appointment, do they decidedd to cancel that appointmebt and set up a new time.Where she hadhad her time and there 20 minutes set for me. I was very pleased with that and I did not feel rushed. She did schedule some test for me, and that was fine wit me. I was very happy with that appointment and her adding the additional time.

Dr. Warner was absolutely fantastic. I was/am impressed by the level of attention and the detailed and easy to understand explanations. Dr. Warner clearly was dialed in. I left feeling confident in the next steps, what I needed to do and more importantly...why.It is hard to say that I look forward to the next visit because that would mean my condition hasn't improved...but if I do need to see a heart specialist again, I would be certain that it is with Dr. Warner

The doctor was called into an emergency meeting so my appointment started very, very late. I don't fault the doctor at all and was very glad I waited for Her. This was my first appointment to establish care with her as my previous cardiologist left his practice. She had an emergency meeting she had to attend to at the time of my appointment. I was told about what time she can see me so I just decided to wait (for about 45 minutes). When she finally attended to me, she was very apologetic about her being late for the appt. And I found out she was quite friendly & smiled a lot. She's very professional and likable at the same time.
