Replacement Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement)

Joint replacement, sometimes also called arthroplasty, is an option when a joint becomes severely damaged by disease or injury. The damaged cartilage of the joint is surgically removed, the ends of the bones in the joint are resurfaced, and a prosthetic is installed. Most prosthetic joints are made of a metal piece that fits into a plastic sleeve so that they glide smoothly. A joint replacement increases stability in the damaged area and decreases pain. The hip and knee are the two joints most commonly replaced, but joint replacement can also be performed on the ankle, shoulder, elbow and even fingers.

Although joint replacement is one of the safest and most reliable medical procedures available, it is still a major surgical procedure. All surgical procedures carry risks, such as infection or blood clots. For this reason, doctors try to help their patients avoid surgery for as long as they can. Taking arthritis medications, losing weight, avoiding high impact sports such as running, taking supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin, or having joint injections may allow a patient to enjoy life without the need for surgery.

After having joint replacement surgery, patients can expect some pain the first few days as they recover. Physical therapy is an important part of recovery, and it can decrease complications and increase future mobility. As soon as possible, returning to low impact sports such as swimming, walking or biking can stretch and heal the new joint. A prosthetic joint can last 15 - 20 years and cannot be further damaged by degenerative diseases such as arthritis, so once it is done patients should be pain-free for many years.

I saw Dr. Barrow due to a problem with my left foot that I have had for a long time, but hadn't discussed with my primary doctor until last month. After getting an x-ray my primary doctor did a referral to Dr. Barrow. When I saw him, he reviewed what the x-rays showed and offered two means of dealing with it. We discussed the options (surgery being one with, in my option, a long recovery) and after discussing it I chose to see about having a boot/brace made for me and have an appointment for that this week. Dr. Barrow listened to my questions and gave me the information I was seeking to make my decisions. If I feel that I need more information from him, I know I can contact him for it.

Was glad my doctor took time to provide me medication for pain from fracture of my heel bone when lost balance while wearing surgical boot fracture would have been worst glad my surgery doctor placed me in Dr Craig Barrows is an excellent doctor when stuck in Bismarck ND he sti took time to faxed pain medicine to Bismarck pharmacy.I appreciate he dedication of patient care going above and beyond we need more dedicated doctors like Dr Craig Barrows him

My referral from another doctor in Lewiston Idaho knew my condition needed a specialist. One thing we did not make final thoughts about could be made at another time. My provider and I did go with least possible help first. That said trial of a brace first before making a decision about the ankle and foot surgery. I really like his ideas about what to do first. I go in tomorrow for surgery with Dr Barrow. Although I am not looking forward to the surgery and mainly the recovery I am very comfortable with Dr Barrow being my surgeon. He did an Achilles repair on my 32 year old son a couple years ago and Dr Barrows was very friendly, informative, and friendly. I will refer him to friends and family if the need arises.

I really appreciate Dr. Barrow. I had a traumatic and complicated ankle injury in 2017. I have been seeing Dr. Barrow for all of my follow up care. I don't need to be seen very often but when I do he is very familiar with my case. He genuinely cares about my health and wellbeing. All of the office staff are very kind and supportive.

I like this practice as a whole and have had good experiences up until this latest visit. I was not comfortable with this provider's demeanor. He seemed brusque and unsympathetic. I " only" had a bone spur and felt like it was obviously routine for him and tested my visit as though this was an assembly line event.

Dr. Barrow was to evaluate whether I would need to have a cast or continue wearing the boot. His decision was to continue with the boot. This was a relief when he said to stay with the boot for three more weeks. At that time I go without the boot. I'm very comfortable doing so. I will follow his recommendation.
