Headache

Headaches are dull or sharp pains that occur in regions of the head and face. Headaches occur in many different forms and vary in location, severity, and duration. They are not necessarily a sign of an underlying illness and often resolve on their own. However, headaches can present significant day-to-day discomfort. The most common forms of headaches include:

Migraines: one of the most prevalent types of headache, migraines typically last from two hours to three days, causing a throbbing pain on one side of the head. Nausea, sensitivity to bright lights, fatigue, and blurred vision all may accompany migraines. While migraines have no known cure, medications and lifestyle modifications may ease symptoms. Avoiding behaviors that may trigger migraines such as lack of sleep or loud, repetitive noises can improve headaches.
Tension headaches: also known as stress headaches, these headaches are characterized by pain in the upper top part of the head and behind the eyes. Tension headaches are common and have no exact cause; however, certain practices may increase the likelihood of developing them. For example, wearing one's hair up in a tight hairstyle or wearing a restrictive hat can put pressure on the scalp, leading to a tension headache. Other causes of tension headaches may include alcohol or nicotine use, caffeine, teeth grinding, stress, overexertion, and eye strain. Some people find posture improvement, alternating sleeping positions, and neck exercise can alleviate tension headaches. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may also reduce tension-headache pain.
Sinus headaches: this type of headache causes pain in the sinuses, but may progress to pain and pressure in the eyes, forehead, and cheeks. These headaches are often accompanied by nasal congestion, fatigue, and ache in the upper teeth and may or may not be caused by sinus infections or sinusitis (sinus inflammation). Some sinus headaches are allergic headaches, which arise from allergic triggers such as seasonal allergies (pollen allergies) or hay fever, causing sinus pressure and facial pain. Other symptoms of allergic headaches include nasal congestion, irritated or watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing. Allergic headaches may be treated with antihistamine medications such as cetirizine (Zyrtec). Allergic headaches are common during pollen season, which is usually around springtime.
Cluster headaches: these headaches occur suddenly and cause stabbing, sharp pain from one eye down to the one side of the neck. They are often referred to as the most aggravating and painful type of headaches. Other symptoms of cluster headaches include nasal congestion, droopy eyelid, and enlarged pupil on one side of the face. In the past, it was widely believed that cluster headaches were caused by a bevy or "cluster" of multiple types of headaches, such as a combination of an allergic headache and a tension headache. Medical experts now recognize that cluster headaches are a separate and unique form of headache. Cluster headaches last for around twenty minutes to two hours. They may recur throughout the period of a day or several weeks, but usually dissipate within a month. Treatment for cluster headaches includes over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motren) and naproxen sodium (Aleve). Prescription Prednisone can help with swelling and Verapamil may reduce pain by relaxing the blood vessels.

Living with headaches is challenging; headaches can prevent people from fully enjoying life. Medical treatment and care in avoiding certain triggers can help those with headaches begin to feel normal once again.

Mononucleosis (Mono)

Mononucleosis, frequently called ''mono,'' is a viral infection that causes fatigue, fever, swollen lymph glands, and sore throat. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), spread through saliva, is the primary virus that leads to mono. Mono is most common in teenagers and young adults, where EBV is often transmitted through kissing or sharing drinks. For this reason, mono is colloquially referred to as ''the kissing disease.'' Mononucleosis usually resolves on its own; however, recovery from mono can take from several days to several weeks. Some young adults may continue to experience extreme fatigue from mono for months, often requiring a semester home from school.

Mononucleosis happens in three stages:

During the initial stage, those with mono may experience few symptoms as EBV replicates in the body. Symptoms such as headaches and body aches are often misattributed to allergies or stress. People with mono may continue performing their daily activities and attending school, leading to increased transmission of the virus to others. The initial stage lasts for about five to fourteen days.

During the acute stage, mono symptoms intensify and may include the enlargement of the spleen, a sore throat, fatigue, liver issues, and skin rashes. The mono infection is at its worst in this stage.

Lastly, the convalescent stage is when recovery begins. This period of healing can last from two to six months.

Mono can be detected by a physical exam; physicians can diagnose mono by checking for inflamed lymph nodes, tonsils, or spleens. Blood antibody tests may also help diagnose mono by revealing antibodies in the blood that were formed as a response to the Epstein-Barr virus. Elevated levels of white blood cells can also suggest that a patient has mono.

There are no medications specifically for mono or the Epstein-Barr virus, and patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous exercise. Drinking plenty of fluids, eating a healthy diet, and taking anti-inflammatory ibuprofen (motrin) may also help people who are afflicted with mono feel better.

People with mono should take precautions to avoid spreading the condition to others. They can prevent infection by not sharing glasses, food, and utensils with others until they fully recover.

Thyroid Problems

Thyroid problems are a group of conditions that alter hormone regulation and metabolism. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower neck, just below the Adam's apple (laryngeal prominence) and larynx (voice box). Despite its small size, the thyroid has an outsized effect on the body by regulating hormones that control metabolism. Metabolism is the body's process of converting consumed food into fuel to power the entire body. Heart rate, weight, cholesterol, body temperature, and even physical growth and development are all affected by the metabolism.

When the thyroid malfunctions, the body is unable to properly process and allocate energy. Thyroid problems, such as hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), cause irregular metabolism. In some cases, the body produces antibodies that attack the thyroid cells for unknown reasons. The damaged thyroid responds by releasing either too little or too much T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. Thyroid malfunctions may also arise from genetic causes or iodine deficiency. Thyroid problems may include:

Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease that causes hypothyroidism
Graves' disease, an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism
Goiter
Thyroid nodule
Thyroid cancer

Hashimoto's is the leading cause of hypothyroidism, which is when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones to stimulate adequate metabolism. The condition is diagnosed by blood tests that measure TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and detect Hashimoto's antibodies. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include sluggish metabolism, inflammation, fatigue, weight gain, brittle hair, dry skin, and sensitivity to cold. To supplement impaired thyroid function, patients with Hashimoto's are typically prescribed synthetic thyroid hormone pills. Such patients may need to consume synthetic thyroids for the rest of their lives. Other treatments may include dietary changes, such as the avoidance of certain foods and medication to reduce inflammation. Frequent blood tests can inform patients if their TSH levels are within a normal range.

Grave's disease is most frequently the cause of hyperthyroidism, which is when the thyroid produces too many hormones, overstimulating one's metabolism. The condition is also diagnosed by blood tests that measure TSH and detect Grave's antibodies. Elevated heart rate, high blood pressure, sweating, bulging eyes, and weight loss are common symptoms of hyperthyroidism. Treatments for hyperthyroidism include oral radioactive iodine, which slowly shrinks the thyroid, slowing the production of excess thyroid hormone. Other anti-thyroid medications such as methimazole (Tapazole) also reduce the production of thyroid hormones. Blood pressure medications known as beta blockers can ease the increased heart rate caused by hyperthyroidism. If treatments are unsuccessful, patients may be prescribed a thyroidectomy, or surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid. Some patients with hyperthyroidism may require ophthalmological (eye medicine) treatments such as eye drops, prednisone, and surgery to reduce eye swelling and bulging.

Untreated thyroid disorders frequently lead to goiters or thyroid nodules. A thyroid goiter is a large lump that can be felt near the base of the neck and is made of swollen thyroid tissue or nodules (excess cell growth). Nodules and goiters are diagnosed by CT scan or ultrasound. Obstructive goiters can cause pain, coughing, and abnormal breathing. The most common cause of goiters is hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). However, Hashimoto's is also known to cause goiters or nodules. Goiters develop from continued damage from antibodies to the thyroid over time. At times, a goiter can result from a cancerous thyroid tumor. Most goiters and nodules are themselves benign.

The exact causes of thyroid cancer are unknown. People who develop thyroid cancer may or may not have another thyroid problem such as Hashimoto's or Grave's disease. Symptoms of thyroid cancer include a nodule that can be felt on the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, swelling in the neck, and neck and throat pain. CT and MRI scans are used to diagnose thyroid cancer. There are four types of thyroid cancer which vary in intensity. Thyroidectomy (thyroid removal surgery) is usually prescribed to treat thyroid cancer.

Thyroid problems are often long-term conditions that require some form of treatment. With regular monitoring and medication, many people with thyroid problems are able to lead active and fulfilling lives.

You know I always brag about the doctors that I have on my care team Dr son has done an excellent job with taking good care of me and sending me to All the Right specialist that I need to go to so I can stay around in this world for a little bit longer you know I have diabetes some amputee I have high blood pressure and he takes care of me I have a cardiac doctor I have this doctor this doctor coming from Northern California and night in 2020 I didn't have any of these doctors I had a doctor that would just write scripts and that was it Dr Sun is a good doctor and I'd recommend him to anybody I feel that I'm in better help now since I've been with Providence medical team and 2020 then I felt in 2018 because I wasn't getting the care that I get now I would recommend Providence to anybody I don't like waiting so long like I have to wait sometimes when you have good doctors they have a lot of patience and you need to bring your patience because sometimes you have to wait

Dr. Sun is one of the most competent, caring, kind, compassionate and proactive drs I have ever seen. Other patients in the waiting room echo this opinion and feel so grateful that he is so thorough and conscientious. I told the nurse that I was so impressed with his prompt replies the same day and that he often replies at 7:00 pm. The nurse said that Dr. Sun is so conscientious that he even replies to patients who email him on the weekend that same weekend. He must be one of the hardest working and most proactive drs. I have ever seen. I feel that I will have less office visits due to him helping me stay healthier and that I will live longer with fewer medicalProblems due to his fantastic care. The call center operator know that Dr. Sun has a huge fan base and said that he is one of the most requested drs in internal medicine.

Dr Sun is very knowledgeable and very helpful in regarding to his patients. He never rush us in regarding to the questions we have he always try to accommodate our need. He really cares about his patients. This appointment was last minute, but he's trying to accommodate us despite his busy schedules. We don't mind waiting until he's available to talk to us and to help us because we know that he can help us and assist us in anyway he can. He's very humble and very Attentive to what we need. We felt really cared for and provided for. Dr Sun is a really good provider that goes beyond what is expected of him to make sure his patients are well and healthy

I've been seeing Dr. Sun for over five years, and I couldn't ask for a better primary care physician. Even though I only visit him annually, he always remembers me and takes the time to listen carefully to all of my health concerns. Dr. Sun is incredibly attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely interested in his patients' well-being. He explains things clearly and always offers helpful, practical advice for maintaining better health. I've already referred several friends to him-though it's not easy to get an appointment because he's in such high demand. Dr. Sun is truly one of those rare doctors who combine deep knowledge with genuine compassion.

Dr Sun is always caring and thorough. You can tell he genuinely cares about his patients. He spends time and does not rush. He listens attentively and is very easy to talk to. I've been a patient for a while now and understand why getting appointments can be difficult. Good doctors are in demand and that being said I definitely want to compliment how timely Dr Sun responds to my chart emails. This is such a comfort for patients who maybe can't get an appointment but know he will respond promptly to questions asked. He is a true professional!

Dr. Sun and his team are excellent. I have been under his care for many years now, and each visit he checks my current health situation with past notes, and keeps me on top of things I need to do right now and in the future to stay as healthy as possible. He listens thoroughly, cares as If he's family, and provides great personalized care. I always feel like my concerns are heard and met with solutions for my best health. Dr. Sun is the ultimate healthcare provider; he listens, explains thoroughly and checks for understanding. Her provides referrals as needed. If I message the office after hours/weekends; he or someone from his team responds by the next business day.I have repeatedly referred friends/family to his care/practice as the entire medical team has always provided kind, patient and importantly knowledgeable care.I m so grateful that my mom is finally in his care. For this routine follow-up appt, abnormal lab result appeared and this provider presented information about the lab, possible causes, physical exam, and treatment procedures including US and referral to specialist. Even ordered a follow-up appt with him. That's why we continue to go to Dr. Sun because he's thorough and gives a complete picture of what's happening.And this totally reinsures us that he "knows what he is dong and truly and really cares about our wellbeing.

I am a new patient for Dr. Sun and my experience was great. It is a little soon to answer some of the questions seeing as to it being my first interaction with him. In short, I don't have enough history with doctor Sun to make my answers relevant to some of the questions. I really appreciated Dr. Sun and his explanation and listening to my concerns. I had been the hospital over the weekend with what at first was thought to be a stroke. On Monday morning zI received a call from Dr Sun's office with an appointment for the next day. I was surprised and relieved that he was able to see so soon after being released from the hospital. Even though it turned not being a stroke Dr Sun was still concerned and zI felt better knowing he had reviewed all my tests and was up to date on what was going on.
