Biopsy

A biopsy is a procedure performed to remove a small sample of cells for testing. The cells are examined in a laboratory to check for disease, or sometimes to see how badly a known disease is affecting them. Biopsy can be performed on any part of the body.

Although biopsy is most often associated with cancer, it can also be used to check for other diseases, such as infections. A biopsy sample can be scraped, cut, collected with a needle, taken with a machine that punches out a tiny piece, or removed with the tiny tools in an endoscope.

In most cases, a biopsy is a simple outpatient procedure. Depending on the procedure, patients may need to stop taking certain medications beforehand, such as blood thinners. It is important for patients to tell doctors if they are pregnant, as certain biopsies require the use of x-rays to guide the needle to the right location. There is usually very little pain associated with a biopsy. Patients will have to wait a few days to hear the results.

Depression

Everyone knows what it feels like to get the blues once in a while. But depression is a serious illness that is more severe than a bad day and lasts much longer. Symptoms of depression stop a person from being able to function and enjoy daily activities for weeks or months at a time. It can happen to anyone, and it isn't something that people can control by force of will or "snap out of it."

Some common symptoms of depression include:

Feeling sad, guilty, empty or hopeless
Fatigue and a lack of energy and motivation
A loss of pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed
Unusual sleep or eating habits
Mental fog -- trouble concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
Physical aches and pains
Suicidal thoughts or a preoccupation with death

We don't yet know what causes depression, but it's thought that it is a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and social influences. Because of this, the most effective treatments for depression combine medication with psychotherapy. Therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, can be extremely helpful in resolving the negative thoughts and feelings that come with depression. It gives patients new tools that they can use themselves to cope when their depression is making them feel down.

Some of the common medications used to treat depression include antidepressants such as SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft) or atypical antidepressants (Cymbalta, Wellbutrin). It's important to remember that these medications have different effects on everybody, and no one medication works right for everyone. Patients may have to try a couple before finding the one that works just right for them. If the first medication they try doesn't work, they should talk to their doctor about trying something else. In extreme cases where medication is not enough, electro-convulsive therapy and hospitalization may be the answer to keeping a severely depressed person safe.

Depression is a difficult illness to deal with, but it is more common than believed and there are many people who can help. With the right treatment, individuals with depression can get back to fully enjoying life again.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to examine the inside of the uterus. A thin tube with a camera and light at the end, called a hysteroscope, is inserted through the vagina. It allows the physician to view the cervix and uterine walls. Sometimes, gas or liquid is used to expand the uterus and allow a better view. If necessary, tiny instruments can also be passed through the tube and used for certain procedures, such as taking a biopsy or removing a polyp.

Hysteroscopy is often done to figure out the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding. However, it can also be used to:

Identify the cause of recurrent miscarriage
Remove polyps or fibroids, non-cancerous growths in the uterus
Remove adhesions, scar tissue within the uterus
Identify uterine septums, a wall of tissue dividing the uterus
Perform ablation, the removal of excess uterine lining

If surgery is necessary, hysteroscopy is often used along with laparoscopy, a kind of surgery performed through small incisions in the abdomen. Tiny tools are passed through the incisions, and the hysteroscope guides the doctors while surgery is performed.

I've been going to Dr. Violi for over 6 years.  The reason I stuck with her so long is that Dr. Violi is AMAZING.  However, everything else about her practice is absolutely awful, esp. the nurse practitioner Lisa Violi.  She doesn't look you in the eye, talks over you, and doesn't listen to any of your concerns.
Over the years I've had to fight for reasonable fees and even called them with other doctor's rates as comparisons.  Just recently I was billed $573 when I came in with a sterile UTI (which is basically all the symptoms with no infection).  The staff had told me it was going to be a long wait and prepare myself to sit in the waiting room for a while.  The answering service that took my off hours call nastily told me, "you know, this is only for emergencies" when I told her I wasn't pregnant.  I told her it was enough of an emergency that warranted my call.
They also overtest for everything.  I am perfectly healthy, although on the older side and they insisted on doing ultrasound after ultrasound as 'preventative'.   They also did a blood draw during an annual routine visit and tested for everything under the sun which I was then billed over $600.
Unless you have complex issues, this is not the place to go.

Dr Violi came highly recommended and I can see why. She was very knowledgable and compassionate. She has been listed as a castle Connolly top doctor for over 10 years and when you meet this fabulous Doctor, you will see for yourself why that is. My doctor told me that his wife went to her and as I asked around so many people go to her and have the utmost reaps for her. She is humble, kind, smart and talented. I was referred for a complicated surgical procedure that she was able to perform laporoscopically. She is an amazing doctor. The greenwich hospital and all of her patients are lucky to have her. Highly recommend her.
