Cardiac Catheterization

Cardiac catheterization is a procedure done to check on the health of the heart. A tiny, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into a blood vessel through a very small opening, usually in the groin, and threaded through the blood vessel up to the heart. Once the catheter is in place, it can diagnose problems in the heart and perform certain corrective procedures.

A coronary catheter can be used to:

Take blood samples
Inject dye for an angiogram
Check for valve defects
Measure oxygen and pressure levels within the heart chambers
Take a biopsy
Perform a percutaneous coronary intervention, or procedure to clear blocked arteries
Widen narrowed valve openings

Because all of this can be accomplished without the need for open surgery, cardiac catheterization has become a popular option.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Can't sing the praises enough for Dr. Fuhs and his support staff. In contrast to a health care environment that seems increasingly automated and frankly, less patient-centered, a visit with Dr. Fuhs is an absolute delight. Firstly, he is warm and affable and truly interested in your health story. Additionally, he encourages questions and responds to them by using easier to understand analogies and metaphors to explain the complex workings of lipids and medicines and their interactions. I also appreciate his interest in exercise regimens and dietary protocols and his eagerness to share his own pursuits in those areas. This transparency creates a sense of collaboration between doctor and patient as well all aspire to create/maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, Dr. Fuhs supports good resources on the, gasp, .internet He affirms the experts on line who are not "quacks" and quickly recommends other online docs and nutritionists. This fit, active 65 year-old has heart disease, and now, because of Dr. Fuhs' guidance and collaboration, I have my LDL and ApoB levels way below where they used to be. I'm confident that I'm reducing my risk of dying early from CVD as well.If you're lucky enough to get in to see Dr. Fuhs, you will not be disappointed!

I drive 600+ miles each way in order to see Dr. Fuhs. Nigh impossible to get appointment when needed. I went anyway and Dr accommodated me. I APPRECIATED THIS VERY MUCH! "Guard dogs" at front desk did their "job" and were only accommodating at my insistence. Not pleasant to deal with. However, my persistence finally prevailed. Dr has been faithful in writing my directions for the future. MY CHART for Providence I cannot connect with. Even with tech help. I had to go back couple of times to get results of tests and Dr's directions. Desk people accommodated this need. Thank you.

I thought the doctor an the nurses an the lady's up front at the desks were great the lady that checked me in was great she was very good at checking me in to see the doctor an that was good to the wait on seeing him was very quick an he didn't let me the go without making sure I understood what was going on with me an the lady in blood test area. They were great an quick on what they were doing so I very much satisfied with the heart institute it a great place to go to I would tell any one that having trouble with your heart it a great place to be an UN care I loved it

Dr. Fuhs is amazing. 10 isn't a high enough rating. He is exceptional! Among his many great skills is patient communication. He walks patients through his analytical process, sharing options and eliciting feedback before deciding what course, if any, to change. He obviously enjoys treating patients as people. Dr. Fuhs stands head and shoulders above any of the many specialists who have treated me during the last 85 years! I am truly, just amazed and grateful.

The ladies at the front desk were awesome they comped my parking I came early and I got in early the doctor was amazing or should I say the cardiologist was amazing very informative knew what he was talking about told me I should switch my medication to night time and it seems to be keeping my blood pressure level all day and at night so I'm extremely enthralled with this new cardiologist thank you guys so very much

I am super impressed with Dr. Fuhs. He is very knowledgeable about current medical science. He listens to my questions and concerns and addresses any special requests I have for testing. He is very careful to not over prescribe medications and also to insure that my side affects are kept to a minimum. He is a strong believer in preventative medicine and diet and lifestyle, including some use of supplements.

Dr. Fuhs is my provider and he is excellent in the knowledge of his field, diet, etc. I felt he listened to what I had to say and HEAR WHAT MY CONCERNS ARE. I'm waiting to hear about my blood work and what is the next step after my Echocardiogram, if anything is needed. The receptionists were extremely helpful and very polite and professional. I am very glad to be a part of this practice.

Dr. Fuhs and his team are great to work with. I moved to Montana four years ago and still use Dr. Fuhs for my cardiology care. I can message any question I have through MyChart and will receive an answer usually within one business day. Prescription refills are easy to request through MyChart and are promptly ordered. Just a great medical experience.

Best doctor ever. So very knowledgeable and compassionate!!! He problem solved with me and established a specific time centered action plan for testing medication and treatment and follow up. He read his recorded instructions and provided a written copy assuring I understood and that I had all my questions answered and was comfortable with the plan.
