Biopsy

A biopsy is a procedure performed to remove a small sample of cells for testing. The cells are examined in a laboratory to check for disease, or sometimes to see how badly a known disease is affecting them. Biopsy can be performed on any part of the body.

Although biopsy is most often associated with cancer, it can also be used to check for other diseases, such as infections. A biopsy sample can be scraped, cut, collected with a needle, taken with a machine that punches out a tiny piece, or removed with the tiny tools in an endoscope.

In most cases, a biopsy is a simple outpatient procedure. Depending on the procedure, patients may need to stop taking certain medications beforehand, such as blood thinners. It is important for patients to tell doctors if they are pregnant, as certain biopsies require the use of x-rays to guide the needle to the right location. There is usually very little pain associated with a biopsy. Patients will have to wait a few days to hear the results.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a kind of minimally invasive surgery using a thin, narrow tube called a laparoscope. Usually performed on the abdomen or the pelvic region, the surgeon makes a few very small incisions instead of one large one.

During the procedure, the surgeon inserts the laparoscope, which contains a light and camera that allows the surgeon to see what is happening inside the body. Then tiny tools are placed through the small openings and used to perform the surgery.

The most common laparoscopic surgery is gallbladder removal, but laparoscopic surgery may also be used for the removal of a kidney or appendix, to treat certain cysts and tumors, for bariatric surgery, for some GERD treatments, or for hernia repairs, among others.

Because laparoscopic surgery only uses a few tiny incisions, the scars are minimal and recovery is easier than with open surgery.

Tracheostomy

Tracheostomy or tracheotomy is a surgical procedure to open an airway in a blocked trachea, or windpipe. A small hole is created in the neck, and a tube is often inserted into the hole to provide support and drainage. The patient can breathe through the hole that is created.

Tracheostomy is performed for a variety of reasons when a bypass to the normal airway is needed. A patient may have an object lodged in their throat or have an injury that damaged their windpipe. They may have cancer or a swelling in their throat that stops air from moving freely. Sometimes tracheostomy is performed to make breathing easier when patients are paralyzed or have trouble coming off a ventilator.

A tracheostomy can be temporary or permanent. A temporary tracheostomy tends to heal over easily when the tube is removed, leaving a small scar. A permanent tracheostomy can make speech difficult at first. It takes time to learn how to use the throat and air in a new way.

Tracheostomy is a fairly simple procedure, but it can make all the difference in a life or death situation.

Dr Louie was great. He laid out the "normal" condition. He explained what's going on in my body. He explained a couple different treatment options, including what was involved in each one and the possible complications of each. He talked freely about the uncertainties around possible treatments and about doing nothing. He answered my questions. He left me with a clear understanding of my options and symptoms to be aware of that could inform my decision making. He also made clear that I might choose to do nothing now, monitor my symptoms, and then, even five years down the road, choose on of the options he outlined and come back. I really appreciated the frank conversation. Thank you!!

He suggested radiation treatment afterwards to be certain the cancer was gone and I have been coming back for CT scans as suggested to make sure the tumor didn't come back. Thankfully it didn't. He told me about a study that tracked MG patients who did and didn't have radiation and I am so thankful that I followed all of his recommendations. Over the years he always took time to answer my questions and provide me with information on how to live the best life I could as a person with MG. I have complete trust in the care that I received from Dr Louie and would highly recommend him.

Dr Louie perfotmed a Very sophisticated procedure on me that If done wrong can create lots of problems. In my case doctor Louie was superb not only did my problem get fixed it got fixed beyond my expectations or what other doctors said I would achieve from the surgery. There were a few bumps in the road during my recovery process but they were all addressed And eventually resolved. The outcome is that I feel 30 years younger look 30 years younger and my day to day attitude on life is the way it should be when you feel good! You have a real soecial surgeon in Dr. Louie And I am grateful that he was able to help me.

I'm a wheelchair user and I appreciated how ALL staff members were attentive to my needs and even thought ahead to hold doors for me and re-arrange room layouts so I could enter/exit rooms in the easiest way possible.Dr. Louie is incredibly knowledgeable and is wonderful at explaining to his patient what the options are, the pros/cons of each choice and the reason behind his recommendations. When we got in our car, my husband said "Wow, I can't believe he took out the poster paper and drew a picture for us of what is happening in your stomach. I finally understand!

I spoke first to a resident (or was it intern?) Dr. It was very interesting to hear the interaction between the Dr and Dr Louie as he used the visit as a teaching opportunity. As always, Dr. Louie is one of the best providers I have ever had. I have great faith and trust in him and believe he is a leader in his field.
