We met with Dr. Soomro to discuss him taking over my 10 yr old son's medication management.  His previous psychiatrist, who he saw for about 2 yrs, is in the city and it was impossible to maintain appointments, so we needed someone closer to home.  After less than 30 mins., Dr. Soomro decided that my son's diagnosis and medication was incorrect, and that he would need to take 2 new medications. He hadn't seen any of my son's records, didn't have a complete picture of my son's issues, spoke mainly to me, barely looked at my son... but he seemed to have it all figured out.  He is unapproachable and presents as disinterested.  When I asked him about alternative therapies (OT/sensory integration) to work in conjunction with psychotherapy and meds, he shut me down - wouldn't acknowledge anything but the meds he had decided upon.  I left feeling very unsettled and frustrated.  How is this man a Dr. for children if he has no interest in speaking to them??  My son and I will not be going back.

He is a doctor you need time to establish a relationship with. When I first started treatment with him demeanor was cold, aloof and uninterested.  Originally I thought another doctor that is pushing pills without concern over my mental health. I was leaving 2 other psychiatrist like that who had me under medicated. It was not an easy process but I was patient, I spoke to him about symptoms, side effects and so on during each visit. We outlined a goal and along with therapy, I began noticing a significant difference. One I never experienced with my old psychiatrists. After a couple months, we found the correct medication and dosage. During that time my outlook changed and that included him. He comes off a certain way but he's vigilant. I've had more psychiatrist than I would like to admit and he's the best one I've ever had. Along with being patient with him you have to show him that you are really dedicated to the treatment plan and committed. He can't help you if you're not and his attitude is a reflection of yours. We have built a great rapport and have recommended him to others. We've gone from me crying and him asking me what was wrong to us laughing, telling jokes and exchanging stories while he asks if I'm doing alright. My recommendation is give it 6 months, follow the plan and come in open minded.
