Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

  • A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
  • A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
  • Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

  • Age
  • Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
  • A family history of heart attacks
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

I feel extremely lucky that Dr Ross has accepted me as a patient. She has a professional yet easy, supportive and non judgmental demeanor. She is extremely knowledgeable and keeps up to date on current research on each patient's illnesses/conditions. She explains things in easily understood terms. She carefully explains her impressions and suggestions and if there is more than one possibility she clearly explains why she would recommend one of the approaches but also welcomes the patient's input about these matters. This was my initial visit with Dr Ross as a patient but I have sat in on numerous appointments that my husband has had with her for his cardiac problems.

This doctor was new to us. She had records but hadn't read them thoroughly enough to be "up to speed", but she was quick to catch up. Also, test results from a heart monitor that had been returned more than 2 weeks earlier weren't yet available, which delayed proper solutions going forward. This, however, was not the doctor's fault. She was caring, competent, and listened very well- even with the strict time constraints she had.

Excellent provider and nurse.I did try to call 13 min before closing and was on hold . Recording said I was next in que. Office closed and got a recording saying call back next business day. Frustrating to be on hold for 13 min then disconnected abd transfered to automated recording. I do not think this is quality customer service. Not staffs problem at all! But how the automated system works. Top notch Doctor!!!!!!!!!!!

I highly respect Dr Ross's honesty and expertise as well as her willingness to not only answer my questions in a mammef I understand, but also gives me insightful information that helps it easier to formulate my own opinion on why or why not I might want to continue (for instance) in a certain meal plan such as keto or Mediterranean or whatever else might be better for my health! Dr Ross shows genuine respect and sincerity in understanding where your coming from and listens intently to your concerns and desire to get back to the lifestyle you are used to living! I was a referred patient from er room and she graciously worked me in on her lunch hour, no less! That"s an amazing caring physician in my opinion! Than you Dr Ross and your staff!

Dr. Ross is personable and professional, imparting complex medical information in a clear and understandable manner. She projected clear, cogent caregiver concern for the concerns which I expressed to her. Frankly, Dr.Ross' clinical manner reminded me of older times when Medical Doctors took time to give comfort to patients. She has my highest respect.

Regarding Dr Ross. She was very kind and reassuring even if tests did not reveal any abnormalities. When she thought I had another question she came in and sat down again. This showed me that she would be willing to listen and give full attention to what I would have to say. Very kind gesture. I was very impressed and comfortable with her.

I saw Dr Ross as a referral from my regular doctor. She was very easy to understand, and went over all the test and blood work that had been done. She was very personable and professional during my appointment. I was satisfied she had researched all the possible answers to my problem, and made a plan to take the next step in my treatment.

Dr. Ross is a great cardiologist who plays a major role in my ongoing care, and was part of the team that I credit with saving my life. Good thing she is great, because she is the only game in town!
