"Dr. Ryan does not listen to patient. Treats patients like a number not a person. She has misdiagnosed my 13 year old son, my husband and myself. We tried to give her a second chance because her doctor office is close to home but now I would rather drive 100's of miles than go to her again. So please save your self the trouble and find a different doctor or it might cause you more serious health problems that would normally not be serious health problems! "

What is Addiction Medicine?

Addiction medicine is the diagnosis and medical treatment of addictions and substance abuse disorders. Addiction is a chronic disease of compulsive or uncontrollable behavior which may have adverse health effects. Addictions include substance abuse (such as the abuse of opioids, alcohol, or perscription drugs) and certain non-drug related behaviors such as gambling. Addiction medicine may help patients recover from their addictions and manage health conditions that have been affected by addiction.

Addiction medicine physicians are doctors who possess specialized training in substance abuse diagnosis and treatment. They can treat patients in rehabilitative treatment facilities, hospitals, and other clinical settings. Patients can be assessed through a variety of means such as diagnostic screening, substance abuse assessment, or psychiatric evaluation. Addiction medicine treatments may include:

Detoxification (withdrawal from an addictive substance)
Pharmacotherapy (prescription medications), such as buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone), disulfiram, and naltrexone to ease withdrawal symptoms
Addiction therapy and psychiatric care, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Overdose treatment, such as the administration of naloxone (also known as Narcan)
Treatment for HIV/AIDs, hepatitis, or other conditions which may be associated with drug use
Prescription medicine for co-occurring psychiatric disorders
Twelve-step programs and support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Addiction medicine has expanded to include the treatment of patient substance abuse in a nonclinical setting. A number of community programs now provide at-risk substance users a safe place or means to use drugs and mobile doctor's services for drug associated illnesses and injuries.
