"The very first time that i had ever been to this office was for a IUD removal in August of 2014. During this time i saw Dr. Lasry. My opinion of her at that apt was that she was very cold and didn't really allow me to ask any questions. After she had pulled out the IUD she literally said "okay done" and walked out the room. I didn't let this bother me being that this was a rather quick and simple procedure that maybe didn't require any questions. To my husbands and I's excitement we got pregnant this March and were elated, and because we heard such amazing things about Waccamaw we decided to go to this office(Carolina obgyn)so that we would be able to deliver at waccamaw hospital. Our first appt with Dr. Richmond was amazing she was very polite, answered all of our questions and was very warm. at 13 weeks 5/9/15 i went to Conway hospital because i had felt a few minor cramps and wanted to make sure everything was okay. To my devastation Dr. Armstrong ( the Er Dr.) came back to tell me the baby's' heart stopped (fetal demise) and that there was nothing they could do. He was very sympathetic and assured me it was not my fault and his bedside manner was phenomenal. This is something i did not expect from a male in this type of situation. He called my family and stayed with me(SOMETHING HE DID NOT HAVE TO DO) until my family had arrived at the hospital. The ogyn at Conway did not feel comfortable doing my dnc so they called waccamaw and when they told me Dr. Lasry was the Dr. on call my heart literally dropped and i cried more! I went in and the staff was amazing they got me up rather quickly where the anesthesiologist explained his part of the procedure while we waited for Dr. Lasry. She came in and said "hi, okay your here for a dnc any questions" My first question was could i have an ultrasound because i would feel far more comfortable doing the procedure if i knew for sure my baby was dead and had a second opinion. Her response " i have no way of giving you an ultrasound(which i find incredible for a hospital to have no way of doing), they ultrasound techs know what they are talking about and so if they say there is no heartbeat there is no heartbeat". My second question was, was there anyway to put my body into labor, and was the dnc basically just going to suck the baby out and rip it all apart, her answer " no you can not push the baby out yourself because you will most likely hemorrhage, and yes that's pretty much how the procedure works, any other questions" at that point i was so through with her cold inhuman like attitude that i just said lets just get this over with then. i understand that it is not her job to cry with me, and she should not feel attached to her patients, but this was ridiculous. I felt that she should have been working with an abortion clinic and not women who hope to have healthy happy babies, maybe even a morgue with the kind of bedside manner she had. I delivered my son with Dr. Tracey Nelson in 2010 at Grand Strand Hospital and had an AMAZING experience, but because of all the hype of your midwifes and amazing hospital i decided to deliver here this time, but NEVER AGAIN. i am actually dreading my follow up appt because of having to see her again. Ive been having a few recovery issues, but im sure none of my concerns will be addressed, i love the idea of midwifes and excellent maternity care, but bedside manner, is the most important quality i believe pregnant women especially look for, and i would not want to go into labor one day and find out that Dr. Lasry was who was on call! I have never in my life felt as though a medical professional had violated my patient rights until now. I asked for a second opinion/ultrasound at your establishment because I trusted in the professional opinions and medical doctors of your staff, but I was greatly let down. I had asked Dr. Lasry for a second opinion because there was a glitch in the system at Conway and that's why it had taken so long for the Dr. to get my ultra sound results. That is why I so desperately wanted to have a second ultrasound tech at your hospital, which I believed to be a better hospital at the time look at babies for themselves. I was completely denied that chance, and now I have to everyday wonder if there was a chance my baby was actually alive. I don't think at any point in time a woman experiencing a DNC should ever feel as if she is actually having an abortion because of the treatment she is receiving. I am very sure that for all women this is a sad process and the grieving aspect of it is extremely hard, but the fear of the unknown has made this harder and has even made me consider counseling so that I may find some kind of closure."
