"First off, I never saw Monika. I made an appointment with her and she sent the bill, but I only saw an RN during my appointment. Usually I'd be fine with this, but in-spite of giving me zero feedback I was sent a large, convoluted bill and multiple requests for followups. When I say zero feedback, I mean exactly that - not even a "sounds good" or "nothing to worry about" or "keep an eye on that." I moved to the area and just wanted to start relationship with a PCP. So I told them my medical history and situation. I didn't need any referrals and I said nothing needed attention. I just wanted them to know my history and situation. The appointment was brief, well under an hour. Apparently, admitting that you have anxiety sometimes during the routine check up questions constitutes multiple charges of emotional assessment. I wasn't given any advice in relation to anxiety. Not even a comment about it. Saying you have occasional hip pain results in multiply PT charges. No one actually assessed my hip, I was handed a card for a PT to call if I wanted to get it looked at. I'm still untangling what all these charges are for. I have post-covid cough, and mentioned it. She didn't tell me anything about it, just asked if I had heart palpitations and moved on. I'm sure I got a few charges for that. They don't do blood-work there so I was instructed to go elsewhere based on a big list. She couldn't even tell me where the closest one was. They wanted me to get the blood-work done and then schedule another appointment to get my results. I'm sure that would have racked up many more charges. They've called me a couple times and texted to get another appointment. Don't go here. I wont be returning and I wont be paying these charges."

What is Addiction Medicine?

Addiction medicine is the diagnosis and medical treatment of addictions and substance abuse disorders. Addiction is a chronic disease of compulsive or uncontrollable behavior which may have adverse health effects. Addictions include substance abuse (such as the abuse of opioids, alcohol, or perscription drugs) and certain non-drug related behaviors such as gambling. Addiction medicine may help patients recover from their addictions and manage health conditions that have been affected by addiction.

Addiction medicine physicians are doctors who possess specialized training in substance abuse diagnosis and treatment. They can treat patients in rehabilitative treatment facilities, hospitals, and other clinical settings. Patients can be assessed through a variety of means such as diagnostic screening, substance abuse assessment, or psychiatric evaluation. Addiction medicine treatments may include:

Detoxification (withdrawal from an addictive substance)
Pharmacotherapy (prescription medications), such as buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone), disulfiram, and naltrexone to ease withdrawal symptoms
Addiction therapy and psychiatric care, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
Overdose treatment, such as the administration of naloxone (also known as Narcan)
Treatment for HIV/AIDs, hepatitis, or other conditions which may be associated with drug use
Prescription medicine for co-occurring psychiatric disorders
Twelve-step programs and support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Addiction medicine has expanded to include the treatment of patient substance abuse in a nonclinical setting. A number of community programs now provide at-risk substance users a safe place or means to use drugs and mobile doctor's services for drug associated illnesses and injuries.
