Neurologist - Las Vegas, NV

"I was referred to Dr. Leo R. Germin, MD by my primary care doctor and, unfortunately, I have not even been able to get an initial appointment scheduled. Reaching this office has been nearly impossible. On multiple occasions I was placed on hold and then disconnected, and there does not seem to be any reliable way to actually speak to someone. There is no patient portal to request or manage appointments. I did fill out the appointment request form on their website over a month ago and never received a call. Instead, I later received a letter saying they “couldn’t reach me,” which is confusing and frustrating given how hard I have tried to reach them. When someone is in need of a neurologist, access and basic communication matter. If you can’t even get through to schedule your first appointment, that’s a serious problem. Based on this experience, I would strongly caution others who need timely care to consider other options."

"Dr. Hyson is not a quack. But he isn't a warm and fuzzy doctor with a good bedside manner. He is a former opera singer who decided that he was better suited for medicine. (This is true.) And so he went and earned his medical degree from Wayne State School of Medicine, and he did his residency, it appears, at McGill in Montreal. Okay, fine. Somewhere along the line, however, he missed out on the ability to interact with other human beings. Whether that's due to his own issues with Asberger's, or perhaps it's just arrogance, we won't know. He was referred to me by another doctor in Las Vegas who had done work with him in the past, and because he does EEG testing right there in the office. I'd suffered a significant concussion, and I was hoping he would help me get relief. He didn't listen. He didn't read my charts. He prescribed me a medication for migraines, even though I'm not having migraines. He ordered an MRI. Then his office dropped the ball and never bothered to get back to me about the MRI. So, you know what? Since he's out of network anyway, I've moved on and found a different neurologist who IS in network, and who has a reputation for being at least conversant with patients. I am married to a future MD whose father is a physician. I get that there are many doctors out there who are absolutely brilliant but have little to no interpersonal skills, and they're better left to doing research. Hyson might very well be one of those individuals. He might be a great guy. He might be an amazing singer -- he sure has the voice for it. And he might be an outstanding neurologist. But he's just not a people person. What's also amusing is that nobody on his staff, including Hyson himself, was aware that the new UNLV School of Medicine had just opened right next door, and that the giant vacant lot adjacent to their building had been cleared for the new state-of-the-art school of medicine's main building. How out of touch with the world must you be to not know this? "

"Absolutely horrible. Went in for history of childhood seizures with current intermittent full shoulder up throbbing headaches that nothing helps except laying perfectly flat along with potential non-POTS dysautonomia (and actively experiencing one of my body dysregulation episodes that was manifesting as an adrenaline rush feeling). She first told me I cannot be autistic because I "don't look autistic" and when I said "Are you f kidding me?!" (again, professionally diagnosed autism), she said I'm bipolar. At that point anything I said or did was further evidence of bipolar in her eyes and she refused to do further neurological exploration for my issues. Even though my PCP sent me to her, and my cardiologist, after ruling out POTS, said I needed to follow up with a neurologist for potential other dysautonomias. She refused to believe autism diagnosis (why this was even an issue I'm still unclear), unless I could provide a copy of my diagnosis and she knew and trusted the doctor. She finally agreed to do an MRI and some other test but when her assistant came in the room to schedule a follow-up, all Dr. Shafi had given her was a referral to a psychiatrist that she (Dr. Shafi) wanted me to see. I refused and left, immediately filing a formal complaint against her. I also called my PCP from the parking lot to ask for a new referral and they were just as abhorred at the "care" I just received. For a neurologist, or any medical specialist, to say that an official diagnosis is not valid because I don't have the right look (and there is no "look" to autism), is absolutely disgusting. Then demanding I'm bipolar because I am now upset while on day two of having one of the body dysregulation episodes that got me sent to her in the first place - that is beyond bad medicine. I do not know how this woman even has a license. She is promoting false psychological claims while repeatedly saying "this isnt my area of expertise but [non-scientific/medical claim]". I do not recommend her at all. "

"Everyone in the front office seems rushed, impatient, and over-worked which causes poor (or no) communication with patients who are forced to wait an hour or more to be taken back to see the Doctor. In between my visits, the front office staff who dealt with my insurance took more than 2 work weeks to contact me with updates (despite my leaving several voicemails asking for information and/or timelines). Definitely not worth the wait. During all of my appointments (5 in total over a period of 4 months) Dr. Milford seemed preoccupied and distracted and his questions/answers were always hurried, terse, or both. He made no eye contact. He seemed frustrated that I was having a hard time speaking succintly and as quickly as he was. Ironically, I went to him because I was having problems with cognitive functioning--including forming thoughts and speaking--making his gruff, hurried manner and poor listening skills all the more frustrating. At one point early on, he sent me for tests which confirmed I have carpal tunnel syndrome in both arms. Huh? That complaint was never even brought up during our 6 minute appointments. After subjecting myself to his idea of practicing medicine for 4 more appointments (I was desperate, I admit, for answers), he recommended I go elsewhere for treatment. He said he didn't have the time to try to figure out what was wrong with me (sudden cognitive impairment including difficulty forming thoughts and speaking). Dr. Milford seems to prefer to take straightforward, easier-to-diagnose cases. He also seems inclined to run unecessary tests like the nerve conduction study that was done on my arms and legs. It makes no sense to me that he never once ordered a scan of my head. For these reasons, I would never recommend Dr. Milford--to anyone."
