"Dr. Fenwick is a true find! He has a kind and gentle nature, yet speaks with authority and knowledge. Last year I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Living in a small town, I didn't know if we had quality surgeons in the Springfield, MO area to deal with my case, or if I should go to someplace like MD Anderson or Mayo. Here's a story of how I came to really trust Dr. Fenwick. My husband works for a global corporation that offers 2nd opinion services, called "Best Doctors". The service assigns you to a top doctor in the nation, who participates in the program for a year at the recommendation of colleagues. The doctor they assigned me to was a cancer doctor in Boston at one of the top hospitals in the country. The service reviewed all my tests, diagnostics, and ran them through their thyroid testing lab to confirm the diagnosis. Also via virtual visit, I spoke with this doctor for over an hour. I was struggling with the difficult decision on whether to stay local with Dr. Fenwick or go out of state, which would be costly and time-consuming (but hey, this is my life we're talking about). This specialist gave me a series of questions to ask Dr. Fenwick (and gave me criteria for what would be good to great answers) to determine whether I should put myself under his care. Dr. Fenwick answered all my questions in a consultation appointment and answered them in alignment with what the specialty doctor would define as "great". One determining factor is the sheer number of thyroidectomies that he does in a given week. Let me just say he does a lot! So, surgery is never fun! I will say that I wish I didn't have to go through the experience at all. I had a few rough patches, namely an unexpected allergic reaction to the surgical glue, and a couple of panic attacks becauase it was swollen and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I know TMI right? The only reason I mention this, is through my panic, his tone was so calm, authoritative, and reassuring. He gently told me to breathe slowly, and totally calmed me down. I did get some breathing treatments to assist with that. Regarding the scar, I was so worried it would be an ugly gash across my neck. Even though it looked glaringly red and bubbly (1 week from surgery) he calmly looked at it and exclaimed "yes, that is going to heal beautifully!" LOL! I looked at him with raised eyebrows but hoped he was right. I'm now one year out from it all and he was right! You could not see the scar at all! I have followed up with him a few times since and he is careful to explain what he is looking for in the aftermath of such a surgery. So if I had a best friend, mom, or someone I really loved need someone like him...yes, I highly recommend him! (Note: this directory has him in Monett, MO. but I saw him in his offices in Springfield, MO)."

What is Head and Neck Surgery?

Head and neck surgery is a subspecialty that provides advanced surgical care for the head, face, neck, and throat. Most head and neck surgeons begin their careers as otolaryngologists (ENTs) or plastic surgeons, but becoming certified as a head and neck surgeon requires additional training.

A surgeon who treats the head and neck has very specific considerations to take into account when operating. The delicate structures of the head and neck control our senses, our speech, our ability to chew and swallow food, and even our ability to breathe. A head and neck surgeon has to be careful to preserve the many functions of the head and neck when performing an operation. Also, when operating on or around the face, extreme care must be taken to leave as few scars as possible, since the face is a critical part of identity and social interaction. It all adds up to a tricky job.

Some of the issues a head and neck surgeon might treat include:

Cancer
Trauma to the face or neck
Thyroid disorders requiring surgery
Sinus surgery
Tonsillectomies / adenoidectomies
Cleft palate repair
Disorders of the larynx (voice box)

Cancers, especially of the esophagus, mouth, lips, and skin around the face or throat, are one of the most common issues requiring head or neck surgery. Most often, head and neck cancers are related to tobacco use. Chewing tobacco in particular affects the lips and mouth. Other risk factors for head and neck cancers include alcohol use and sun exposure.

Often after surgery, but particularly after the removal of a tumor, head and neck surgeons will perform reconstructive surgery, including microvascular surgery to connect or replace skin tissue. The goal is to restore not only a patient's function but also their appearance in this critical area of the body, improving self-esteem.
