What is Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery?

Ophthalmic plastic surgery is cosmetic or reconstructive surgery of the area surrounding the eye, including the eyelids and tear ducts. It is sometimes referred to by several different names, including oculoplastics, ocular or orbital plastic surgery, or oculo-facial plastic surgery. The physicians who specialize in this field are typically ophthalmologists who have trained in plastic surgery, so they are able to improve facial issues in the delicate tissues around the eye.

Ophthalmic plastic surgery may be performed to improve the function of the eye, as is the case with drooping eyelids, eye trauma, or tear duct obstructions. It may also be performed to improve the appearance of the eye and face, for example via eyebrow surgery, brow lifts,

  • Blepharoplasty, or surgery to lift or reconstruct eyelids
  • Removal of skin cancer on the eyelid or around the eye
  • Eyebrow lifts or repositioning
  • Tear duct surgery
  • Forehead lifts
  • Repair of trauma to the eye area
  • Removal of damaged eyeballs and preparation of the socket for a prosthetic eye

The goal of ophthalmic plastic surgery is to protect your vision while improving your appearance.
