"I visited Dr. Stevens twice this year for primary care between going to specialists and having diagnostic imaging and tests for cervical and nerve dysfunction and think we would have gotten along better if he'd been less snarky, and left out the sarcastic one-liners like "Now what did you do?" He maintained a passive aggressive banter while performing my workup, “So is there a drug you had in mind you wanted to try today?” There wasn’t, so I mentioned other types of care I sought including physical therapy, biofeedback, and chiropractic adjustment and his ego took over the room, clearly the talk of using such “Cr*p” innervated him to the extent that he started spitting rhetorical questions about how I could really believe that “Cr*p” could help me. He continued arguing with himself and railed on non-pharma solutions; it was a lecture I wasn’t prepared for and didn’t know how to respond. Falsely sensing that I’d scheduled my appointment with him to pointedly dissect his competence or healing abilities, he questioned aloud if I believed he could even help me. He continued on about how treatment efficacy primarily resides in the patient’s mind…Ironic, right? That, if I didn’t believe he could help me, then he essentially couldn’t. Then he paused for what I thought was dramatic effect, but actually turned out to be the manipulative placement of low-hanging fruit for me, the patient. He waited for me to assure him of my confidence in his personal abilities and those of modern medicine; but I stared blankly, trying to make sense of his maneuvers. Then, becoming more unhinged, he took his access to any type of treatment or relief and put it out of reach, by declaring that we weren’t a good match and that he thought I should see someone else. Caught off guard by his dramatic splitting, I rewinded mentally to see how things had went so decidedly wrong from a few hours earlier in the day when I had decided I couldn’t take the headache and dizziness anymore and made the appointment in hopes of palliative relief and to complete the in-house NGPG requirement of an office visit and notes being entered prior to being able to schedule a visit a member of NGPG Neurology. Puzzled, I tried to understand how things digressed from a mere twenty minutes earlier, when I’d described my symptoms and complaints to the empathetic triage nurse. I thought I’d get some sort of relief, or at least an exam of my pupils, tonsils, or for the doc to take a listen to the sounds of my chest but no, none of that happened and the chances of such were looking slim. I didn’t feel good. I didn’t feel up to debating, or enduring hazing to join up with Team-Naturopath or Team-Pharma. I just wanted my headache pain to be addressed and to get a referral to Neurology for the recurrent headaches. When I said this, he was a bit knocked back, I guess he wasn’t told this by the triage nurse notes. He began to enter the notes in my chart for the referral saying he wasn’t aware of the required in-house office-notes referral protocol but I stopped him, letting him know I didn’t want a referral from him at this point. Before sulking out of the room, he stopped and reiterated our ‘break up’ by saying we weren’t a good match, and to find someone else. Needless to say, I wouldn’t recommend Dr. Stephens. Dr. Stephens evaluation of me was incomplete at best, his behavior was fueled by his egomaniac obsessions, his hatred of adjunct therapies, and his bedside manner was offensive and demeaning."
