"I started seeing Dr. Kurako on 10/3/18. I'm seeing her for pains in my arm that literally take my breath away. Our visit went well she really made me feel like she cared & could help. I was told to buy an over the counter neck brace (which I'm on husky it's hard enough for me to pay my normal bills let alone treat myself to a neck brace, but I got one anyway) and that I would need a CT Scan. Husky requires prior authorization when it comes to big testings like CT Scans & MRI's so the office was going to work on it and call me. 3 weeks went by my neck got way worse wearing the neck brace at night. I couldn't even raise my left arm above my head at this point. I called to check the status of the CT Scan I was told by a medical assistant that they would call me back they had to check the status. She called me back and basically without saying it the other medical assistant dropped the ball and she needed to restart the entire prior authorization process. I told her how I cannot raise my arm over my head and she stated the DR won't do anything until we get your CT Scan. 3 MORE weeks went by and I call the office for the THIRD time to check the status of my CT Scan and the medical assistant gets on the phone with an attitude telling me the DR doesn't want to do the CT Scan anymore. I stated how I still couldn't raise my arm over my head and how I feel like the office is making me feel like I'm a bother, I was basically brushed off the phone and not reassured that I wasn't a bother. The medical assistant said she'd ask the DR and call me back. So after 2 months of chasing this office down I still do not have any answers. "

What is Neurology?

Neurology is the study of the brain and nervous system, including the spinal cord and nerves. Disorders of the nervous system can affect many parts of the body, and a neurological exam must be quite thorough. A neurologist examining a new patient will check for any issues with:

motor skills (the way your brain and muscles work together)
sensory skills (sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell)
nerve function
coordination and balance
changes in mood or behavior

A neurologist can order different kinds of tests to check the function of the brain and nerves. These tests may include a head CT scan (a type of 3-dimensional x-ray), an electroencephalogram (which measures the electrical impulses inside the brain), an MRI (a detailed image of the brain or spinal cord), or electromyography (which uses electricity to test nerve function). The results of the exam and the tests help neurologists diagnose and form treatment plans for disorders like multiple sclerosis, tremors, stroke, and migraine headaches.

Some neurological problems, such as certain brain tumors, may require surgical treatment. Since neurologists do not perform surgery, they will refer patients who need operations to a surgical subspecialist, such as a neurosurgeon. Beyond surgery, a neurologist might recommend any of the following treatments:

medication (such as interferon for MS or topiramate for migraines)
laser therapy (class IV laser treatment is sometimes used to alleviate peripheral neuropathy pain)
physical therapy (stretches and exercises can increase balance and range of motion, helping patients to move more easily and with less pain)

Therapies such as these can improve quality of life for patients dealing with neurological disorders. Neurologists help their patients sense and interact with the world at their very best.
