Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery, using a tiny opening to get inside the body instead of making a large cut. It uses small tools attached to a thin robotic arm, which is controlled by the surgeon. Robotic surgery may be referred to by the specific kind of robot that is used. The most advanced robot currently in use is called the da Vinci, and surgery using it is sometimes called da Vinci surgery.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury medicine is a branch of medicine that treats damage to the spinal cord from an injury or a nontraumatic myelopathy, which is any disorder that affects the spinal area. The spinal cord is a section of nerve tissue protected by the vertebrae (spinal bones). Trauma to the spinal cord, typically caused by compression or bent vertebrae, prevents the body and brain from communicating. This can result in pain, loss of sensation, and impaired physical function and movement. Acute spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are a leading cause of permanent disability. Spinal cord injuries may develop from accidents or myelopathies, disorders that provoke spinal compression. Traumatic incidents such as falls, sports injuries, vehicle accidents, and bullet or stab wounds can cause an acute spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury medicine seeks to stabilize the spine and to alleviate the symptoms of spine damage. Practitioners of spinal cord injury medicine are called spinal cord injury specialists. Spinal cord injury medicine is an interdisciplinary field, meaning physicians of various specialties may be trained to treat spinal cord injuries.

Damage to the spinal cord may initially be diagnosed through X-ray, MRI, or CT scans. Patients can also undergo spinal exams to evaluate their sensory ability and strength. Surgical procedures can involve shifting vertebrae, removing bone, or altering spinal placement with implantable devices. Patients with significant spinal trauma may require urgent surgical intervention.

Surgical treatments can be complemented by rehabilitative physical therapy to improve mobility. Spinal cord injury specialists also treat complications arising from a spinal injury, such as respiratory or bladder conditions. Some patients with spinal cord injuries may require lifelong treatment. Spinal cord injury specialists aim to help these patients successfully adjust and lead an improved quality of life. An emerging treatment for spinal cord injuries is neural prosthetics, which replicate patients' lost nerve function. Dr. Ritter is an amazing surgeon! He is kind, caring, & understanding. He takes time and listens to his patients. If it wasn't for Dr. Ritter I don't know what I would have done!

I came to him with a history of chronic back pain due to childhood idiopathic scoliosis. After trying every noninvasive route with no relief, together we decided on spinal fusion to straighten my spine & decrease pain. This surgery was a huge deal to me as I had been trying to put it off for over 20 years. The thought of this surgery terrified me. Choosing Dr. Ritter for my proceedure was a no brainer. He is diligent in his work & strives for perfection. Nearly 3 months after my fusion of T4-L4 I can say I feel like a brand new woman.  I could not be happier with my results!! 

I would highly recommend Dr. Ritter!!!

I am 27 years old, and this year alone, I have had 3 back surgeries and 9 hospital inpatient stays. Before meeting Dr. Ritter, one Orthopedic Surgeon performed all of my surgeries, and all of my hospitalizations were at my local hospital (not St. Joe’s). When I called Dr. Ritter’s office to make an appointment for evaluation, they were able to get me in 3 days later, completely unheard of at my former surgeon’s office! During my first visit with Dr. Ritter, he spent over an hour speaking to my parents and myself; he really listened to my story, and showed real concern for my well-being. Within one weeks’ time, all necessary tests were completed, Dr. Ritter personally called me to let me know the good news, and tell me surgery could be scheduled. Let me repeat: all within 1 week! On 9/1/16, Dr. Ritter performed my fusion. Once at home, I used my walker for about 3 days, and my back brace for a week. 10 days after my fusion, Dr. Ritter had me in outpatient physical therapy (more fantastic and caring people!). At this time, I’ve been in therapy for about 6 weeks, I have no more nerve pain, I am off all pain medications that I had been on all year long, and I am finally able to return to work! I owe it all to Dr. Ritter and the physical therapy team at St. Joe’s; I truly cannot say enough good things about my experience. In the competitive world of medicine, Dr. Ritter’s kindness and humility is a welcomed breath of fresh air!

I have been going to different doctors for my low back for years.  All are suppose to be "the best” ( UM and Beaumont).  Having three failed back surgeries and each of these experts spending less then 5 minutes with me, even after the failed operations, I heard about Dr Ritter.
From the moment he entered the room I felt more comfortable.  It was not a PA or his nurse, rather him, asking all the question and doing the exam.
He spent 45 minutes with me, then wanted me to come with my wife to discuss surgery.
He was honest, upfront and very  meticulous.  
I am 3 months out from my operation with Dr Ritter and I can not be happier.  He gave me my life back.
What an amazing surgeon, but more impressive is the individual.  Could not recommend highly enough.
