Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common disorders diagnosed in children. It is characterized by hyperactivity and difficulty maintaining focus or paying attention. ADHD may last into adulthood for some patients. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with this condition than girls, although medical experts are unsure why this is. ADHD symptoms include:

Forgetfulness in home, school, and work activities
Inability to sustain focus for longer periods of time
Frequent distraction by other stimuli
Tendency to fidget and squirm
Excessive talk and movements

There are three main types of ADHD:

Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive types show symptoms such as constant fidgeting, talking non-stop, touching everything, having trouble sitting still and waiting their turn, and interrupting others.
Predominantly inattentive types are easily distracted or bored. They may wander off during tasks, forget instructions, daydream, or appear not to be listening. This type sometimes goes undiagnosed as children with it are not hyperactive and may have few behavioral issues.
Combined types show symptoms from both categories. This type is the most common type of ADHD.

Treatment can include stimulant medications and behavioral therapy to teach patients ways to navigate their world and control symptoms better. In addition to treatment, accommodations at school or work can greatly help people with ADHD improve their productivity and confidence. A structured environment (with lots of organization and well-defined rules) seems to help most children with ADHD function at their best.

ADHD is mainly thought of as a disorder that affects children, but symptoms can last into adulthood for many. In adults, ADHD has similar symptoms as when it is seen in children: impulsive behavior and difficulty maintaining focus. These symptoms can cause problems in both careers and relationships. Additionally, adults with ADHD are at increased risk for substance abuse. Medications can be an important part of treatment for adults, as well as learning stress reduction techniques and organization skills. Specialized ADHD coaches can help adults with ADHD manage their symptoms and thrive in life.

Bipolar Disorder

Commonly known as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder is a serious mental condition characterized by extreme changes in mood. Individuals with this disorder experience emotional highs, or manic episodes, and lows, or depressive episodes. These episodes are distinct periods that are separate from the moods they may usually feel.

During manic episodes, individuals may:

Feel very happy and energetic
Speak very fast and about many different topics
Become much more active than usual
Have trouble sleeping
Engage in impulsive behavior, like spending a large sum of money

In contrast, depressive episodes may bring about:

Sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
Very low energy and activity levels
Forgetfulness and trouble concentrating
Loss of appetite
Thoughts of death or suicide

Episodes may be a mixture of both manic and depressive symptoms. In such an episode, individuals with bipolar disorder may feel sad, empty, and hopeless but have a high level of energy at the same time. Sometimes, changes in mood are less dramatic. For example, individuals may feel happy and think everything is fine, but people around them may notice their mood changes. Episodes like this are called hypomania. If an individual is hypomanic and does not receive proper treatment, their condition will likely worsen.

Generally considered a lifetime illness, the disorder begins in the late teen or early adult years. Bipolar disorder has no known cause, but research has shown that it tends to run in families. To diagnose it, a psychiatrist carefully assesses an individual's moods and behavior patterns. They may also be asked to keep a daily record of their moods and other factors that can help with diagnosis and determining the right course of therapy. Counseling is a typical form of treatment, as is a group of medications that can control symptoms, called antipsychotics.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a disorder that causes emotional instability. Once triggered, people with BPD experience more intense feelings that influence how they treat others and themselves. Essentially, people with BPD "hear" amplified emotions at a higher volume and for longer periods of time than those without BPD. Some who have BPD describe "being on the border," often feeling insecure and split between both negative and positive feelings. Mood swings, impulsivity, and insecurity are all hallmark symptoms of borderline personality disorder. No single cause of BPD is known, but it may arise from factors such as:

Physical brain development: Researchers have found that people with BPD had differences in the frontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala - the parts of the brain that control decision making and behavioral and emotional regulation. Brain differences in people with BPD typically occur during childhood development.
Neglect and abuse: Neglect from one or more caregivers and any form of abuse (both in childhood and adulthood) are factors that may contribute to BPD.
Genetics: People with a family history of BPD, mental health problems, or addiction problems are more prone to be diagnosed with BPD.

As BPD is rooted in an unstable sense of self and intense personal emotions, symptoms of BPD may vary between patients. Common symptoms of BPD include:

Rapidly changing moods
Black and white thinking
ntense and unstable relationships
Distorted self-image
Self-harming behavior
Dissociation (feeling detached from one's environment, body, and/or thoughts)
Anger issues

Borderline personality disorder is diagnosed by a psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical social worker, or other mental health professional. The disorder is a type of "Cluster B" personality disorder, which are chronic conditions characterized by unstable and dysfunctional behaviors that affect one's relationships with others. People with BPD often have co-existing mental conditions, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, or substance abuse.

Borderline personality disorder is known to develop and become present during adolescence, however, mental health providers rarely diagnose anyone under the age of 18 with BPD. Mental health providers analyze behaviors, family history, and discuss symptoms with their patients, which may lead to a diagnosis using the DSM-5 criteria for BPD.

Borderline personality disorder is treated with psychotherapy and oral medications. Forms of therapy like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help people with BPD identify self-destructive attitudes and harmful behaviors, which they may then be able to manage or change. Group therapy is another treatment option which may improve people with BPD's ability to share their emotions and to promote positivity. Psychiatrists may prescribe patients antidepressants and/or anxiety medications such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Wellbutrin (bupropion), and Zoloft (sertraline). Some patients may receive antipsychotic drugs which can help stabilize mood and reduce impulsivity.

With consistent treatment, people with BPD are able to recognize and prevent destructive behaviors and mood swings, typically by changing their patterns of thought. Many people with borderline personality disorder are able to live successful and healthy lives.
