Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common disorders diagnosed in children. Nine percent of children in the USA have been diagnosed with ADHD. Symptoms, which include hyperactivity and difficulty maintaining focus or paying attention, can last into adulthood for some patients. Boys are four times as likely to be diagnosed as girls, although experts don't know why this is.
There are three main types of ADHD:
When diagnosing ADHD, it is important to rule out other issues that may be causing the symptoms. Seizure disorders, hearing loss, anxiety, and domestic problems are some examples of problems that can cause behaviors similar to those seen with ADHD.
Treatment can include stimulant medications, behavioral therapy to teach patients ways to navigate their world and control symptoms better, and accommodations at school or work. A structured environment (with lots of organization and well-defined rules) seems to help most kids with ADHD function at their best.
ADHD is mainly thought of as a disorder that affects children, but symptoms can last into adulthood for a third to half of those diagnosed. In adults, ADHD has similar symptoms as when it is seen in children: impulsive behavior, difficulty maintaining focus, being easily distracted, or a tendency to fidget. These symptoms can cause problems in a patient's careers and relationships. Additionally, adults with ADHD are at increased risk for substance abuse. Medications can be an important part of treatment for adults, as well as stress reduction techniques and organization skills training. Specialized ADHD coaches can help adults with ADHD manage their symptoms and succeed in all areas of their life.
Mental Health Issues
Mental health issues, also referred to as mental health disorders or mental health illnesses, are a wide variety of conditions that impact behavior, emotion, and cognition. There are many different forms of mental health issues, some of which are acute (short-term), while others are chronic. Common mental health issues include:
No single cause of mental health issues exists. Multiple factors may increase one's risk for developing mental health issues, including but not limited to:
Mental health issues are typically diagnosed by a provider like a psychiatrist or a psychologist. These issues are diagnosed through psychological evaluation and talk therapy.
Mental health therapy can be an effective tool in supporting people who are struggling with unwanted feelings, behaviors, or difficult circumstances in their lives. Many forms of therapy are available, including specialized therapies tailored to particular disorders. For many issues, therapists help patients manage their conditions through talk therapy. Other treatments can include medication or stays at a psychiatric facility. Mental health therapy can help people with mental health issues improve their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Our son was born June 1st of 2023 with an emergency cesarean and was nearly a month premature. He was a surprise in the first place and we were very much not prepared. The whole situation at the hospital was a traumatic mess. The only thing I felt ready for was that I did extensive research on who’d be caring for our baby boy. Minutes after he was born the nurses asked me which doctor I preferred. Thankfully even while in shock I told them Dr.Hulst. The following morning after we were able to sleep for >1 we awoke to find Dr.Hulst in our hospital room thoroughly examining our son . She personally corrected his tongue tie before we were discharged and in our follow up appointment he appeared to have jaundice. I suspected this , however I assumed it was minor and our bedroom doesn’t have the best lighting so it wasn’t very obvious. Dr.Hulst tested his bilirubin and although it was elevated she looked at him and had a gut instinct that her equipment wasn’t accurate. She sent us to the hospital to test again to find out his bilirubin was dangerously high. After a day and a half of phototherapy he was much improved. Our premature little boy is now in the top 90% for weight and 95% in length. He’s 4 months and can say 5 different words . He’s made so much progress and Dr.Hulst is to be thanked for most of it. We’re so grateful to her for her promptness in his care and excellent judgment.
