Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is one of the most common disorders diagnosed in children. It is characterized by hyperactivity and difficulty maintaining focus or paying attention. ADHD may last into adulthood for some patients. Boys are more likely to be diagnosed with this condition than girls, although medical experts are unsure why this is. ADHD symptoms include:

  • Forgetfulness in home, school, and work activities
  • Inability to sustain focus for longer periods of time
  • Frequent distraction by other stimuli
  • Tendency to fidget and squirm
  • Excessive talk and movements

There are three main types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive types show symptoms such as constant fidgeting, talking non-stop, touching everything, having trouble sitting still and waiting their turn, and interrupting others.
  • Predominantly inattentive types are easily distracted or bored. They may wander off during tasks, forget instructions, daydream, or appear not to be listening. This type sometimes goes undiagnosed as children with it are not hyperactive and may have few behavioral issues.
  • Combined types show symptoms from both categories. This type is the most common type of ADHD.

Treatment can include stimulant medications and behavioral therapy to teach patients ways to navigate their world and control symptoms better. In addition to treatment, accommodations at school or work can greatly help people with ADHD improve their productivity and confidence. A structured environment (with lots of organization and well-defined rules) seems to help most children with ADHD function at their best.

ADHD is mainly thought of as a disorder that affects children, but symptoms can last into adulthood for many. In adults, ADHD has similar symptoms as when it is seen in children: impulsive behavior and difficulty maintaining focus. These symptoms can cause problems in both careers and relationships. Additionally, adults with ADHD are at increased risk for substance abuse. Medications can be an important part of treatment for adults, as well as learning stress reduction techniques and organization skills. Specialized ADHD coaches can help adults with ADHD manage their symptoms and thrive in life.

The dr is the best Dr I have ever had. I have so much jaded issues with medical system, he has made me feel safe and heard. It is the first time I have ever respected or liked my dr since I was a child. I don't like the reception staff though they are rude and don't seem to want to help people especially the nurses. I can ask is someone here the nurses will dead look at me and walk away. They could just be decent and say "someone is coming". But they don't and I always need to wait longer. I only come here for the dr otherwise would find different office. But good job hiring competent compassionate drs

Dr. Walston saw me as a drop-in for a cough that had been worsening over 3 wks. He knew my medical history, was very attentive, thoughtful, kind and responsive. I felt that he listened to me and provided excellent care. He also discussed follow-up and said that if I had worsening symptoms or didn't improve that I should contact his team the next week. (this was near xmas so not sure my regular doctor would be in). I greatly appreciated the visit and care I received and would highly recommend Dr. Walston to others.

Because of my age and disability I have had to return to Mercer Island Swedish Primary care, instead of going to Issaquah. Dr. Stephen Waldron has excellent bedside manners and he explains everything clearly. Recommended an x-ray for my problem of chronic coughing.I am still having difficulty accessing my chart information since it seems my password is not working. Only when I use my birth date am I opened to my information. I got here so I'm pleased.

Dr. Walston is my new internist. I've seen him once in person and was surprised that when I needed to see him for pre-op reasons, he only had telemed appointments available. I believe it is important for the patient to have options to have an appointent with their their doctor in person. I have been acustomed to seeing my provider In person as needed for the years I've been a patiet at this clinic.

I find the care good with my regular physicians. Sometimes it is a problem with a referral with scheduling usually the appt is far out in the future. Usually I'm good with all my appointments as I don't have urgent health issues, usually maintenance.

In addition to my annual physical Dr. Walston drained a painful myxoid cyst on my toe and followed up with advice on further treatment and an antibiotic. This was done without having to wait for another appointment and was greatly appreciated.
