Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, happens when bacteria enter the body through the opening where urine is normally released. The bacteria infect the lining of the urethra and bladder, turning them red and inflamed. This causes pain in the abdomen or pelvic area, a burning sensation during urination, a sense of urgency about going to the bathroom, frequent urination, and urine that smells bad and looks cloudy, or even contains traces of blood. If the urinary tract infection is severe, it may travel all the way to the kidneys, a more serious kind of UTI called pyelonephritis. Patients with this kidney infection might have blood in their urine, feel back pain, and develop a fever.

Urinary tract infections are extremely common: 12% of all men and 40-50% of all women will have a urinary tract infection during their lifetime. They are more common in women because women have shorter urethras, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel from the outside of the body to the bladder and cause an infection. Some people also have urethras that are an unusual shape or have an obstruction in the urethra that makes getting a UTI more likely. Also, certain chronic illnesses like diabetes weaken the immune system, so any bacteria in the body are more likely to cause an infection.

A urinary tract infection can be diagnosed very quickly by a doctor. A sample of urine can be examined under a microscope for the presence of bacteria or white blood cells. There are also diagnostic strips that can be used to test a urine sample without the need for a microscope. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment is a course of oral antibiotics, and most patients feel better within just a few days. There are some things that patients can do themselves to help reduce the risk of getting a urinary tract infection in the future. Stay well hydrated, wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom, wear breathable cotton undergarments, and don't hold it in when patients feel the urge to go.

I love my doctor and will continue to come here because of the level of care. However, my appointment was cancelled 2 days before the appointment date because "they didn't have a radiologist", at this point I had already wait 2 months for the original appointment and then had to wait another month to finally go in for my appointment. That was really frustrating. When I finally went in for my appointment, everyone from the front desk to the radiologist and my doctor were fantastic. Which is why I'll continue to come here, but I wish their scheduling/staffing team was better about scheduling appointments so that they don't have to cancel on me last minute after I've worked my personal schedule around it and waited so long.

Dr klevens listens carefully to all questions and concerns, she explains every single step in what's happening during an exam visit. She makes you feel comfortable, respected and heard as a patient, and I genuinely can't stress just how valuable I find that in a doctor. The one time she had to leave for an emergency and I saw another doctor, I had a much less pleasant experience. I'd recommend dr klevens to anyone.

I feel lucky to have Dr. Klevens as my gynecologist. She is the best doctor ever. Very professional and answers my questions without judgment and is compassionate and understanding. I cannot imagine seeing anyone other than Dr. Klevens: I have been her patient for the last 16 years. She is exceptional in every way, and always shows kindness, concern, empathy and professionalism during my visits. The wait time to schedule or even get a call back to schedule was longer than it has ever been. Feel the office needs more schedulers during peek hours weekdays.As for Dr. Klevens, my visit was only a consultation. My doctor's dedication to my health and well being was evident. I live in Redondo Beach and travel to Santa Monica just for her.

My OB/GYN of 20 years died, so I needed a new one. Sara Klevens came highly recommended. I liked her very much and would recommend her. The only thing I didn't love was that the soonest appointment I was months away. Next time, I will be able to make an appointment earlier now that I know it takes months to get on her schedule.

The wait times at this provider are always extremely long. I've been going to Dr. Klevens for years and I absolutely love her. I think she is a fantastic doctor and she's the reason why I keep going back. However, the amount of time spent waiting always makes me thinking about changing providers...until Dr. Klevens comes

Dr. Klevens is great but the front desk staff is not very friendly. They don't acknowledge you when you arrive even if you are standing right in front of them. They still carry on their personal conversations with each other and then they will start speaking to you once they are done. Very unprofessional.
