My 8 year old son had a routine annual physical with Dr. Papadopoulos in March of 2018. During the exam, she forcibly retracted my uncircumcised son’s foreskin, thereby tearing it and hurting him. She said that uncircumcised foreskin should be fully retractable by this age and that since it is not able to be retracted fully, it isn’t getting cleaned properly. (I later learned, according to modern medical studies, that at age 8, the majority of uncircumcised boys’ foreskin is not fully retractable. Furthermore, the modern medical consensus is that retraction of foreskin for hygiene is not needed till the foreskin is fully detached and that it is harmful to forcibly retract the foreskin.) Dr. Papadopoulos never informed me or my son that she would be retracting his foreskin, nor did she even ask permission to do so. Dr. Papadopoulos reiterated several more times that my son’s foreskin is so bad that he should see a urologist to have it corrected if it doesn’t detach itself by the summer. My son complained that the doctor’s retraction of his foreskin during the exam was painful, that it was painful to walk after the exam, and that his urination gave him a stinging pain for days following the exam. I contacted a different physician’s group after the exam and explained what had happened to my son. They said that Dr. Papadopoulos was completely wrong. She was wrong to forcibly retract my son’s foreskin, she was wrong to say that partially attached foreskin has to be retracted for proper cleaning, and she was wrong for not seeking my or my son’s consent before retracting his partially-attached foreskin. They referred me to studies showing that foreskin detachment often lasts till age 13 in normal uncircumcised boys. My son’s foreskin is perfectly normal and healthy. We wrote a letter to Dr. Papadopoulos asking her to explain where she had learned that foreskin should be detached by age 8 and that it is necessary to forcibly retract foreskin for proper cleaning. She wrote back saying only that she received the letter and would not be responding further. Other points about Dr. Papadopoulos that I found disagreeable: 1. She did not introduce herself to me at the appointment. She just came in to the exam room and began the exam. She was not my son’s normal pediatrician and we had not seen her before. (We only used her due to a scheduling conflict with my son’s normal pediatrician.) 2. In addition to the annual physical charge, she also billed me a $70 surcharge for “procedure code 99051 (Service(s) provided in the office during regularly scheduled evening, weekend, or holiday office hours, in addition to basic service)”. When I asked about this, her office responded that this “is billed for any services that occur at 4pm and after.” This was a routine annual physical well visit at 4pm on a Tuesday which her office had said they had available. They did not mention anything about a surcharge before the appointment. 4pm cannot reasonably be considered “evening”. Her office eventually removed the charge, but only after I complained to my insurance company who contacted her office.
