Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is the use of a special tool called a colonoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end) to examine the inside of the colon and rectum. The tube is typically inserted anally, and it allows the physician to examine the large intestine from the inside. It may be done at any time to diagnose bowel problems, but routine colonoscopies are advised after the age of 50 to screen for colon cancer.

A colonoscopy may be performed to diagnose:

  • Intestinal ulcers
  • Polyps
  • Bowel cancer
  • An unidentified source of pain or bleeding in the intestine

Patients may be asked to drink only liquids in the days before a colonoscopy, or they may be given an enema to remove residual fecal matter. Before the exam, patients are given medication to help them relax, and then lay on their side on a table. The scope is inserted into the anus and gently moved all the way through the large intestine. Air may be pumped into the intestine to improve the view for the physician. Any polyps that are found will be removed. Then the colonoscope will be withdrawn. A colonoscopy is not usually painful, but patients may feel some bloating or have some cramps right afterward. If patients have polyps removed, they might experience a small amount of bleeding. Any side effects should go away within a few hours.

Gynecologic Surgery

Gynecologic surgery is surgery performed on a woman's pelvic region. It is usually performed by an OB/GYN and can involve the bladder, rectum, or reproductive organs. Surgery in this area may be performed for many reasons, but the most common procedures include:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Fibroid removal
  • Treatment of endometriosis or other heavy bleeding
  • Cancer treatment, including cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancers
  • Removal of ovarian cysts
  • Infertility treatment
  • Treatment for incontinence
  • Sterilization or 'tube-tying'
  • Surgery for pelvic organ prolapse
  • Repair of vaginal tears

More and more, gynecologic surgery is moving towards the use of minimally invasive surgery. Minimally invasive surgery uses several small incisions and tiny tools and scopes to perform the operation, rather than one large opening. While it is not appropriate in every case, minimally invasive surgery can lead to less scarring, less blood loss, faster recovery, and a lower chance for infection. Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery may be performed with a laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera on the end that allows the surgeon to see inside the body. It may also be performed robotically, using even smaller tools and cameras that a surgeon controls from a computer. Robotic surgery allows even better vision, precision, and control than laparoscopic surgery.

Over the course of a lifetime, many women need pelvic surgery to stay healthy. Qualified gynecologic surgeons will have the right tools at their disposal to provide care with a minimum of discomfort.

Dr. Awad is an excellent physician!I have a very completed case, with many health issues. I have gone in to see her and she has reviewed my chart the day before I went in, with all of my issues, trying to connect the dots. I have a neurological disease, that is progressive, and not even the specialist at Stanford could give a definite diagnosis name, saying it is too rare to even be diagnosed. There is always the question regarding how many of my health issues are neurologically connected, so she works hard to manage my symptoms, as well as spending extra time trying to connect the dots. She always spends a lot of time talking with me, encouraging me and caring for me as a whole person, not just my physical issues. I highly recommend her, even though I run the risk of her getting even busier and it taking longer to get in to see her

Dr. Awad has always met my needs for many years and I appreciate having her as my doctor. The wait time is all that needs to improve. Coming to the office seems less of a problem than trying phone or FaceTime appointments. The last appointment finalized on my daughter's phone as we finally got through to the office to tell them we are still waiting and the phone is not ringing. The initial call was the only call that rang on our end. At least one other call from St Joseph's was made on same phone used by the staff member for the first call to ready us for Dr. Awad's call. Because of this we are sure the problem was not on our end. My daughter checked all settings on my phone to be sure my phone was not screening the calls.

Dr. Awad has always demonstrated her care for me as well as her familiarity with my health history and concerns. She knows when to be proactive and when not to overreact. She is engaged and interested in the "whole patient" and the factors that contribute to their health, and she recognizes that no two patients are the same or are defined completely by their bloodwork. She is a fantastic physician. In the past, the appointment system made it very challenging to schedule time with Dr. Awad, but she explained that a new system has been adopted that has improved scheduling for both doctors and patients. Well done!

Dr Awad is absolutely a Wonderful, caring Doctor. Took me a long time to find a Doctor that will listen and help you understand and manage health issues. She heard a Heart murmur something no other Dr. Ever mentioned to me and immediately referred me to a Cardiologist. And that's after 66 years later, 5 children.and many check up thru the years. Dr Awad took her time and I Love her for caring and listening about my concerns. When my employer changed insurance and it appeared that Dr Awad and SJHMG would no longer be in network providers, I made the decision to pay out of pocket for minimal reimbursement because I was unwilling to loose access to Dr Awad. I have been very happy with St Joseph and St Jude facilities but might have had to make changes for other services (labs, mammograms, colonoscopy) but I would have sacrificed financially to continue seeing Dr Awad for my primary care.

I have been seeing Dr. Awad for over a decade with a few years of not coming to her due to pregnancy or needing an appointment at a time I couldn't get an appointment with her. I am now scheduling them for summer when I am off work because she truly makes me feel more comfortable than any doctor. She remembers me each year I come see her even if there were a few years in between visits.

Dr. Awad is a fantastic doctor. I would recommend her to anyone I know. Unfortunately, she is so busy that unless you are her first patient, you usually have an hour or more wait. They need to schedule patients every 30-45 minutes. I appreciate the time and care she has for her patients, but waiting an hour was a frustrating and I did not anticipate being late for work.

In terms of scheduling an appt with my primary care doctor, the system is easy to use, but it takes a long to get in. Dr. Awad tends to run late, but it is expected, so not a problem because she gives great care, spending as much time as needed going over my complete health issues, lab works, evaluating and making referrals as needed. She is an excellent doctor!

I like Dr. Awad, but this visit was very stressful for me. She was over an hour late for our appointment and talked so fast that I didn't get to ask any questions. She Reviewed my lab work which I already knew about because I print my reports out but never reviewed anything that we had discussed at a previous appointment.
