My experience with this therapist left me in a worse condition than when I first sought treatment. He provided an incorrect diagnosis and was unwilling to reconsider when his judgment was questioned. I am now in therapy, working through the repercussions of his misguided care.
I wish I had read these reviews before meeting with Dr. Schaffer -my experience with him was similar to the other reviews listed here and ended up being a complete waste of my time.
If you are on thi website looking at reviews I would recommend continuing your search with a different doctor because therapy with Dr. Schaffer left me worse than when I began.
Our sessions lacked direction and failed to address the specific issues I was seeking help for.
Therapy with Dr. Schaffer left me worse than when I started. He lists trauma as one of his specialties but based on his treatment of my own trauma I would not see this provider for that or anything else.
I had a bad experience and Dr. Schaffer was dismissive of my concerns.
offered little insight and sometimes appeared judgmenta
INSIST that he disclose your diagnosis to you and explore whether a different approach is needed. Dr. Schaffer withheld my diagnosis from me for over a year and watched as his incompetent unlicensed trainee provoked and aggravated my condition to the point where I could barely function. After they danced around releasing my records for months, I raised the issue of a HIPAA violation - he finally had his trainee sit down with me (and the version of the DSM published in 1994) to tell me he had concealed the diagnosis because he "wasn't sure how I would receive it." My next psych revealed her suspicions at the VERY FIRST SESSION and suggested that I would benefit most from a different therapeutic approach that SHE, a PSYD, doesn't specialize in. Now Dr. Schaffer wants to shrug his shoulders while I struggle to put my life back together - I'm still in therapy a year later trying to repair the damage. Calling Dr. Schaffer was the single worst mistake I've ever made.
